Growing Up in India: Engelbert's Early Years
You were born to British citizens living in India. What are your memories of growing up in Madras?

“India was a magical place to grow up. My father was in the military, and we lived in a stunning home near the harbor. The vibrancy of the country was unmatched—imagine streets bursting with color from the vibrant garments people wore. The climate was perfect, and the monsoon rains brought a refreshing change. As a child, it was an exhilarating experience living in such a dynamic environment.”
Music in the Family
Where did your love for music originate?
“Music was a part of my family life. We all loved to sing together. I remember singing songs as a child at the age of 5 or 6. Later, I discovered Jimmy Dorsey, a saxophonist, and fell in love with his rendition of ‘So Rare.’ At 11, I decided I wanted to learn the saxophone, but it didn’t quite work out for me. Thankfully, my voice became my instrument, and it served me well.”
Parental Support and Early Struggles
Did your parents support your dream?
“My father was skeptical. When I was struggling as an artist, he once asked my future wife why she didn’t encourage me to get a ‘proper job.’ But she stood by me, saying, ‘He will do what he wants to do. He’s stubborn like you!’ Her unwavering support meant everything to me.”
Success didn’t come easy for you, did it?

“No, it didn’t. I moved to London and tried to break into show business, facing rejection from countless agents and managers. But I learned early on that rejection is a part of the journey. You have to keep pushing and knocking on doors, even when it feels impossible. Persistence is key.”
The Birth of Engelbert Humperdinck
You were born Arnold Dorsey. How did you decide to change your name?
“I started as Gerry Dorsey, but it wasn’t until Gordon Mills, my eventual manager, suggested the name Engelbert Humperdinck that things took off. Having a unique name proved to be a game-changer.”
How did “Release Me” in 1967 change your life?
“It was a life-altering moment. Suddenly, I could pay off my debts, and the taxman stopped knocking on my door. That song traveled the world, something that’s rare today. It was the beginning of a whirlwind career where I released three hits in one year and performed 300 shows annually.”
Collaborations and Friendships
Tell us about your variety series in 1969.
“It was a fantastic learning experience. Guests like Tony Bennett and Jerry Lewis graced my show. Every collaboration taught me something new. If you’re going to borrow inspiration, borrow from the best.”
What was your friendship with Elvis Presley like?
“Elvis was one of the most gracious individuals I’ve ever met. When we first met, instead of a handshake, he gave me a warm embrace. We connected instantly and supported each other’s performances in Vegas.”
