Hoda Kotb Shares Funny Injury Story: Scotch Tape Saved The Day

'Today' Star Hoda Kotb Gets Emotional About the Personal Impact of Her

On a Wednesday morning in late April, Hoda Kotb, the beloved host of NBC’s Today show, walked into the studio with a little more than just the usual morning energy. She had a minor injury to her toe, but that didn’t stop her from shining bright as ever. Let’s dive into the story of how she turned a subway mishap into a memorable moment on national television.

Hoda’s Subtle Mishap on the Subway

Hoda Kotb, now 59, explained to her cohost Jenna Bush Hager that her injury happened in the most unexpected place: the New York City subway. “I was rushing to get to the studio, and I ended up switching subway cars,” Hoda shared. “In the process, I jammed my toe pretty hard. But you know what they say, adrenaline keeps you going, right? So, I powered through and got here.”

Hoda’s toe injury wasn’t severe, but it was enough to make her rethink her footwear for the day. Instead of her signature heels or stylish sandals, she opted for a pair of trusty tennis shoes. “I couldn’t find any medical tape at home, so I had to get creative,” she admitted.

Hoda confessed that her home was short on proper medical supplies, leading her to an unconventional remedy. “I only had Scotch tape, and I thought, why not give it a shot?” she said with a laugh. Jenna Bush Hager, looking genuinely surprised, asked, “No way! You Scotch-taped your toe?” Hoda replied, “Yes, I did. I even Googled how to tape a toe properly. Turns out, it wasn’t too bad.”

Hoda went on to explain her search for the perfect taping solution. “I thought we had a first aid kit somewhere, but it was nowhere to be found. Then I remembered my kids have some colored tape for crafts, but I couldn’t locate that either. All I could find was some old Christmas tape. Hey, it worked!”

Kids Steal the Show on "Bring Your Kids to Work Day"

The following day, Thursday, April 25, Hoda brought her daughters Haley, 7, and Hope, 4, to the studio for “Bring Your Kids to Work Day.” It was a fun-filled day for the Today show family, as several cohosts brought their children along. Craig Melvin’s son Delano and Dylan Dreyer’s eldest son Calvin were also part of the lineup.

The kids added a delightful touch to the segment, with Calvin, 7, exclaiming, “Hey, this doesn’t seem so hard!” while sitting at the news desk alongside Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones. The segment was full of laughter, giving Today show viewers a glimpse into the personalities of these young ones. Calvin loves cooking with his mom during their popular “Cooking With Cal” segments, describing it as “pretty fun.” Meanwhile, Delano, 10, playfully refused to give his chair back to his dad, Craig Melvin, prompting Al Roker to joke, “And by the way, he reads faster than you!”
