Jason Segel on Working with Cobie Again

Jason Segel, who is now 44, opened up about his experience of working with Cobie again after years of friendship. He shared some insightful thoughts with Variety in an interview on December 24. “Shooting with Cobie again was a dream,” Jason said. “We did nine years of How I Met Your Mother, and that was never part of the Marshall/Robin dynamic. So, it was this gap in our acting experience together.”

He continued, “I think the reason people are reacting to it, the reason it feels like, ‘oh, I would like to see them together again,’ is because this is a scene where two people are meeting for the first time, but you’re supposed to have some other sense of, ‘whoa, what’s going on there?’”

Jason went on to explain, “What’s going on there, which is so cool and how acting works, is that we knew each other for 10 years in our most formative years, through thick and thin and becoming who you are. And then to be standing across from each other as full-grown adults saying, ‘look at us still here, still standing.’ These are two characters who’ve been through some tough times, and Cobie and I have each separately been through some tough stuff side by side.”

When asked if he’d like to see Cobie return for season 3, Jason teased, “I’m not trying to give any spoilers. But I think it’s all a reflection of if Jimmy can get his s–t together.”

Bill Lawrence's Thoughts on Bringing Cobie Back

Bill Lawrence, the cocreator, writer, and director of Shrinking, also chimed in about the possibility of bringing Cobie back as Sofi in season 3. “I would kill to have Cobie back in the show,” Bill told TVLine on December 24. “We always do Easter eggs for what the next season’s about in the season before. And so, Cobie’s character is kind of a personification, a visual representation of what moving forward looks like for Jason’s character. If I can’t get lucky enough to have her back, we’re gonna have to go back to the drawing board.”

Bill added, “I was a How I Met Your Mother fan, and I did not even think about it when I was watching the scene, which is a good thing because a bad version of that could be like, ‘Oh, this is kind of cool. It’s just two old friends from a beloved show doing a scene together,’ but it felt authentic and was so romantic.”
