Remembering the Past: Tom's Holiday Traditions

Tom shared some heartwarming memories of his family’s past holiday traditions during an interview with Parade on December 6. He spoke about the cherished rituals they had at the ranch, which dates back to 1910. It’s an old hunting lodge where the entire Selleck clan used to gather for Christmas. "All the Selleck family, my brothers and sisters, my mom and dad, we’d all open presents in the lodge and then go over to the house and have dinner," Tom recalled. But as families grow, traditions evolve. "It’s gotten impossible because my mom and dad are gone and my brothers and sisters all had kids and now they have kids. We’d need to rent a hall," he joked with a chuckle.

Embracing Change: A New Holiday Tradition

With his kids now grown up, Tom revealed that their family traditions have shifted to accommodate their current lives. "Christmas is something for Jillie and Hannah and me, really," he told Parade. "Maybe we go to one of my brothers’ or my sister’s house for a while, but mainly it’s family time just for us." It’s clear that Tom values the simplicity and intimacy of spending time with his immediate family during the holidays. There's something truly special about creating new memories while honoring the old ones.

Recently, Tom made a stylish red carpet appearance with Jillie, 66, and Hannah, 35, at PaleyFest 2024 in New York City. They were there to celebrate the historic end of Blue Bloods after 14 successful seasons on CBS. "These eight shows that we can look forward to are because CBS agreed and wanted to do that and celebrate—not only celebrate Blue Bloods but commemorate its legacy. And I just wanted to thank them," Tom said at the event before part two of Blue Bloods season 14 began airing on CBS.

Reflecting on Blue Bloods and Fatherhood

Tom also took a moment to reflect on the incredible success of Blue Bloods, a show that defied all expectations in the tough Friday, 10 p.m. time slot. "I have great faith and have had great faith in broadcast television. I think it’s suffered from being put in second or third place. And, you know, I don’t think everybody in the world wants to spend an hour on their remote control looking for what they might want to see," he shared with the crowd. "That was hard at 10 o’clock at night … That’s rare. And, as much as anything, it’s a reflection of the work we do. And that’s kind of the ultimate compliment," Tom added.

But above all his achievements in Hollywood, Tom takes immense pride in being a dad. "You never stop being a dad even though your kids are grown," the devoted father told Parade in September 2018. "There aren’t a lot of good, strong, examples of patriarchs trying to do the right thing on television. So, I think that performs a certain function; fathers are important." It’s clear that Tom values his role as a father just as much as his career, and that balance is something we can all admire.
