Beloved TV icon Alex Trebek isn’t letting the challenges of the coronavirus outbreak weigh him down, even as he continues his personal battle with cancer. In an exclusive conversation with Closer Weekly, close friend Ruta Lee shares how the 79-year-old legend is handling everything with grace and resilience. “God bless him. He made it easy,” Ruta says, offering a glimpse into Alex’s unwavering spirit. Despite the difficulties posed by the pandemic and his ongoing health journey, Alex remains focused on managing his life with strength and determination.
Life in Quarantine: Staying Busy Amid Uncertainty
Ruta admits that when Jeopardy! announced a hiatus due to the pandemic, Alex initially struggled with finding ways to stay occupied. “For a short time, yes. He’ll go back, you know. It’s tough on him,” she explains. While the pause in his work routine was challenging, Alex found ways to adapt. “He said there [are] times when his energy sags terribly, but the producers at Jeopardy! are very understanding and accommodating. They give him breaks when needed, allowing him to recharge and come back stronger,” Ruta reveals. This thoughtful support has helped Alex maintain his composure and focus during these trying times.

Staying Sharp: How Alex Keeps Busy at Home
Even in quarantine, Alex hasn’t let his mind or body idle. According to Ruta, he’s been using his time wisely by tackling home improvement projects. “He knows how to do plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work. He loves to read, so he stays mentally stimulated,” she shares. Alex’s resourcefulness knows no bounds—he even stocked up on tools after purchasing from a hardware store that was closing down. “He has every tool in the world because he bought out the entire store,” Ruta laughs. It’s clear that Alex approaches life with the same curiosity and dedication that made him a household name.

A Supporting Partner: Jean Trebek’s Role
Alex’s wife, Jean Trebek, plays an integral part in keeping him healthy and motivated. Given his stage IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Alex must take extra precautions. “I think that’s part of it. He has the most beautiful [wife] in every way,” Ruta praises Jean, highlighting her role as a pillar of support. “She’s not only beautiful on the outside but she’s beautiful internally and spiritually. She’s a true handmaid of the Lord’s.” Jean’s unwavering care ensures that Alex remains grounded and hopeful despite the challenges he faces.
Through it all, Alex continues to find joy and gratitude in life. “He’s grateful to wake up every day and see the sunrise,” Ruta notes. The legendary host credits his fans for their overwhelming support, which he says has been instrumental in his recovery. “He told me a couple of months ago that he owes his continued success to the millions of prayers and well-wishes from his fans and friends,” Ruta recounts. For Alex, faith and community have become guiding forces in his journey.
