Beloved television icon Alan Alda is embracing the challenges of quarantine life with his wife, Arlene Alda, as they navigate the uncertainties of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite being at a higher risk for COVID-19 due to his battle with Parkinson’s disease, the M*A*S*H legend says he's actually "having a great time" alongside his long-term partner during these unprecedented times.
In an exclusive interview with AARP the Magazine for the June/July issue, the 84-year-old actor shared that he's found numerous positives in this period of isolation. Speaking candidly, Alan joked about how he's "extremely pleased" with the changes that lockdown has brought to their home in Long Island, New York. It’s not just about surviving, it’s about thriving, and Alan is doing just that.

Alan expressed how quarantine has inspired his wife to explore her creative side. “My wonderful wife, Arlene, has been finding new ways to express herself during this time,” he said warmly. “She's revisited her passion for painting and drawing, and she plays the piano every single day. Not only that, but she's also experimenting with cooking, which keeps things exciting around here." It’s clear that Arlene’s newfound zest for creativity has added a positive energy to their home life.

Alan, who has been married to the talented musician since 1957, joked about how much he’s enjoying her culinary creations. “Let me tell you, I haven’t eaten this well since the last epidemic! Her meals are absolutely delicious, and it’s a treat to have her cooking up a storm in our kitchen.” It’s a testament to the couple's strong bond and ability to make the best of challenging situations.
Staying Fit and Positive Despite Health Challenges
Even as Alan indulges in the pleasures of quarantine life, he’s also prioritizing his health by maintaining an active lifestyle. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015, Alan has been diligent about staying physically fit. "When I first learned about my condition, I made a conscious decision to exercise a lot," he revealed. "Many people hear they have Parkinson’s and immediately spiral into depression and panic, but that’s not helpful. You’ve got to take action and do everything you can to manage the symptoms."
Alan emphasized the importance of regular physical activity in managing Parkinson’s. “Walking, biking, and engaging in other activities can make a huge difference,” he advised. “But there are also specific exercises that target the symptoms directly. For me, moving to music has been incredibly beneficial. It’s not just about physical health; it’s about keeping your spirit alive too.” His proactive approach to managing his condition is truly inspiring.
