Insights Into an Unlikely Connection
In a sneak peek of the special, Kyle Kennedy opens up about the deep bond he shared with Hernandez. “It was definitely [a relationship],” Kennedy shares candidly. “We talked about everything under the sun—things that wouldn’t even seem believable. He would tell me he wanted to marry me. If there was anything I ever wanted in life, he promised he’d make sure it happened.”
Hernandez and Kennedy crossed paths while they were both inmates at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts. Hernandez, a former football star, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd. Tragically, Hernandez died by suicide in his prison cell in April 2017 at the young age of 27.

Kennedy goes on to describe the intimate moments they shared in prison. “We’d lock ourselves in to cook food, smoke, get high, listen to music, and just chill when we didn’t want to be around other people,” he recalls. “I’d never done anything like this before. We used to write letters back and forth to each other all day. We had sex once or twice a week whenever the opportunity arose.”
A Deeper Connection Beyond the Bars
According to Kennedy, their relationship wasn’t just physical—it was emotional. Hernandez confided in Kennedy about his legal troubles. While Hernandez was on trial for Lloyd’s murder, he was also indicted for the deaths of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado. Although Hernandez was acquitted of these charges four days before his death, the stress of his legal battles weighed heavily on him.
