Tom Jones doesn’t mince words when it comes to the meaning behind his new song, “I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall.” This heartfelt track is a tribute to his late wife, Linda, the love of his life with whom he shared nearly six decades of marriage. “This song is all about standing by the people you love," he shared candidly during a recent appearance on The Voice UK. “Sometimes, they need that extra support, that strength, and encouragement to keep going. And that’s exactly what Linda meant to me,” he added. It's clear that this isn’t just a song—it's a love letter.
Reflecting on Life Without Linda
Since losing Linda to lung cancer in 2016, Tom, now 82, has spent a lot of time reflecting on their incredible journey together. “I’m so grateful for the life we built, but I can’t help wishing she were still here with me,” he says with a bittersweet smile. “We would’ve grown old together, facing life’s ups and downs side by side. There’s only ever been one true love in my life, and that’s Linda.” His words carry the weight of years of devotion and the kind of love that transcends time.

From Childhood Sweethearts to Lifelong Partners
The legendary performer, born Thomas Woodward in South Wales, met the woman who would become his wife, Melinda Trenchard (known as Linda), when they were just 12 years old. “We grew up together, and from the moment we met, there was an undeniable connection,” Tom reminisces. Their shared passion for music only strengthened their bond. “We could’ve been a double act if she wanted to go that route,” he jokes. “But Linda had her own dreams, and she supported me in pursuing mine.”

A Marriage Built on Love and Sacrifice
Tom and Linda tied the knot in 1957, when Tom was just 17 and Linda was 16, expecting their son, Mark. To provide for his young family, Tom worked hard during the day as a construction worker while singing in local pubs at night. “Linda was my rock,” he recalls fondly. “She believed in me 100 percent and told me she’d do whatever it took to help me achieve my dreams. That kind of unconditional support is rare, and I’ll forever be grateful for it.”
The Rise of Tom Jones
By 1964, Thomas Woodward had transformed into the iconic Tom Jones, scoring his breakout hit with “It’s Not Unusual.” While the record company initially kept Linda and their son out of the spotlight to bolster Tom’s image as a sex symbol, Linda remained steadfast in her role as his anchor. “She didn’t crave the limelight, and that suited her perfectly,” Tom explains. “She wanted a normal life for us, and she created a beautiful home where I could retreat after the chaos of the stage.”
As Tom’s fame skyrocketed, he became known not only for his powerful voice but also for his flashy performances and enthusiastic fans. But behind the scenes, Linda was always there, grounding him when things got overwhelming. “When you start getting big hits, your head can swell a bit,” Tom admits. “But Linda always kept me humble. She’d remind me who I really was—and that was the best thing anyone could do for me.”
The Challenges of Fame
Despite their strong foundation, Tom’s early years of stardom weren’t without their struggles. He admits to straying from their marriage during the height of his fame, engaging in relationships with other women, including a two-year affair with Mary Wilson of the Supremes. “I made mistakes, and I’m not proud of them,” he confesses. “But Linda handled it with grace. She didn’t want the details of my life on the road; she trusted me to come home to her.”
Though Linda appeared to take everything in stride, it wasn’t easy. Friends and family urged her to leave him, but she refused. “She knew me better than anyone,” Tom says. “She understood the pressures of fame and chose to stay by my side through it all.”
Linda’s Quiet Strength
As the years went by, Linda became increasingly private, avoiding public appearances and media attention. Even when Queen Elizabeth II knighted Tom—a moment he calls the proudest of his career—Linda stayed home. “She didn’t care about appearances or accolades,” Tom explains. “She was content being the woman behind the man.” Despite her health challenges, including emphysema and battles with cancer, their bond remained unshaken. “How do you walk away from someone you love so deeply?” Tom asks rhetorically. “There was no question of divorce. We were a team, through thick and thin.”

Saying Goodbye and Moving Forward
When Linda was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer in 2016, Tom canceled his tour to be by her side. “She was the calmest person in the room,” he recalls with tears in his eyes. “Meanwhile, Mark and I were falling apart. We were a mess, but she held us together.” Before she passed, Linda made Tom promise he wouldn’t let her death define the rest of his life. True to his word, he sought counseling and returned to the stage just months later. “She was a force to be reckoned with,” he says with a smile. “She taught me how to live with purpose and joy, even in the face of loss.”
