You know, sometimes life throws curveballs, but how we handle them is what truly defines us. That's the story of Ruth Buzzi, a legendary comedienne who's spent her life making people laugh. As she once told Closer in 2015, “My singular agendum was to help people enjoy their lives through laughter.” And boy, has she ever delivered on that promise.
Recently, Ruth, now 86, has faced some tough challenges after suffering a series of strokes. But here's the incredible part: she's not letting it get her down. Even though she's bedridden and incapacitated, Ruth continues to approach her struggles with the same humor that's defined her career. Her husband of 43 years, Kent Perkins, shared with us, “She wants you to know she is not in pain and is aware you are sending your best wishes her way.”
It’s inspiring to hear that Ruth is handling this difficult time with such grace and courage. Kent added, “Believe it or not, she's still handling her situation bravely and still with humor. She can still speak and understand, she still recognizes all her friends and loved ones.” Talk about a fighter!

Bringing Joy Through Comedy
Ruth Buzzi, born and raised in Rhode Island, became a household name during the late '60s and early '70s as part of the iconic Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In crew. Her quirky characters, like the cranky Gladys Ormphby and the nosy Busy-Buzzi, became staples of sketch comedy. Ruth reflected on those glory days, saying, “It was fun being on top of the heap for quite a while.” And while she admits her comedy was “so very tame” compared to today's TV standards, her impact on the genre remains undeniable.
Her career didn’t stop there. Ruth went on to rack up an impressive list of guest appearances, lent her voice to countless projects, and even delighted generations of children as Suzie Kabloozie on Sesame Street from 1993 to 2006. In 2021, she officially retired from performing, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and joy.
A Life of Simple Pleasures
For decades, Ruth and Kent have called their serene North Texas ranch home. It’s a world away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and Ruth wouldn’t have it any other way. “Instead of listening to managers and agents, I get to hear cows mooing, roosters crowing, and the pitter-patter of little duck feet down by our beautiful lake here at the ranch,” Ruth once told Closer. But she also joked, “By the way, raising ducks isn’t necessarily what it’s quacked up to be!”
Kent has been reading fans' heartfelt get-well messages to Ruth, and she deeply appreciates the outpouring of support. “She thanks you for being her friend,” Kent shares. “Whatever happens, please know you have always been loved right back.”
