Maria Shriver has spoken candidly about her relationship with her ex-husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, after the infamous love child scandal that shook their world. In an exclusive interview with People, the former NBC News journalist, now 69, revealed how they've managed to find common ground and joy in life through their grandchildren.
Speaking on Wednesday, March 26, Maria expressed that she and the iconic Terminator star, now 77, are in a "wonderful place" as they navigate life post-divorce. It's a testament to their ability to rise above past challenges and focus on what truly matters: family.
Rediscovering Laughter and Connection
Maria shared a heartfelt moment, saying, "We laugh a lot about our kids, our grandkids, and even ourselves. It's incredible how much joy we find in staying connected. For nearly 50 years, we've been part of each other's lives, and that bond is something we're both incredibly proud of." This sentiment came while promoting her first poetry book, I Am Maria, which delves into her personal journey and reflections.

Arnold and Maria welcomed their third grandchild in November 2024 when their daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger, and her husband, Chris Pratt, introduced their son, Ford Fitzgerald. Katherine, 35, is also a mother to daughters Lyla Maria, 4, and Eloise Christina, 2. Alongside their other children—Christina Schwarzenegger, 33, Patrick Schwarzenegger, 31, and Christopher Schwarzenegger, 27—Maria and Arnold have built a thriving, interconnected family.
Grandmotherhood: A New Chapter of Joy
Maria expressed her profound appreciation for the role of motherhood and now grandmotherhood. "Watching my kids grow, finding their passions, and building their own families fills me with immense pride," she said. "I cherish every moment we spend together, whether it's deep conversations or playful moments at the park."
"Being a grandmother has reignited my sense of wonder," she continued. "I've rediscovered how to play, be silly, and let my creativity soar. It's a gift to witness my children thrive and meet my grandchildren, each one bringing their unique light into my life."

A Journey of Healing and Growth
Maria and Arnold married in 1986, but their union was tested when Maria discovered Arnold's secret relationship with the family maid, which resulted in a child in 1997. The revelation led to her filing for divorce in 2011, and their divorce was finalized in 2021. Despite the challenges, Arnold has maintained a close and open relationship with his son, Joseph Baena, from that relationship.
Reflecting on this period, Maria wrote in her book, I Am Maria, "In the darkest moments, sitting alone on the hotel room floor, I realized this wasn't the end. It could be a new beginning, a chance to reinvent myself. That realization has been transformative."
Celebrating Success: Patrick Schwarzenegger's Rise in Hollywood
Maria also expressed her pride in her son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, who has gained recognition for his role as Saxon Ratliff in The White Lotus. "Patrick's success is a phenomenon, and I couldn't be happier for him. He's worked tirelessly, and his dedication has paid off," she said. "He's surrounded by a great team who truly supports him, and I encourage him to enjoy every moment of this incredible journey."

Patrick shared a humorous anecdote about watching the show with his parents. "We watched the first episode together, and everyone had different reactions," he said. "Dad found it hilarious, while Mom was a bit confused by the nudity." Despite the occasional awkwardness, Patrick acknowledged the shared experience brought his family closer.
However, Patrick admitted that some upcoming episodes might be too intense for family viewing. "I'll probably watch the final episodes alone. They're wild, and I might need a bathroom break to handle the tension," he joked during a recent appearance on Drew Barrymore's daytime talk show.
