Remembering Bob Saget: A Conversation With Dave Coulier

Lori Loughlin's Full House Co-Star Breaks Silence As Judge Refuses To

When Dave Coulier met Bob Saget at a comedy club at the tender age of 18, little did he know they'd become lifelong friends and co-stars. "I'd been doing stand-up for just two weeks. I still had braces on my teeth and long hair," Dave recalls to Closer. "I told Bob, 'I'm moving to California.' He said, 'When you get there, call me.' And I did. For a while, I didn’t have an apartment, so he let me crash on his couch." It’s moments like this that reveal the true bond between these two comedic legends.

In 1987, Dave and Bob joined forces on the iconic sitcom Full House. "We genuinely cared for each other," Dave shares, his voice heavy with emotion. The pain of Bob's sudden passing last January is still raw, but Dave finds solace in the cherished memories and laughter they shared. "Bob will always be in my heart," the 62-year-old comedian says, his voice filled with warmth.

Today, Dave stars in Live+Local, a fresh new comedy about a morning radio host available on Pure Flix. It's a role that showcases his talent and adds a new dimension to his storied career.

What can you tell us about your new role on Live+Local?

"I play Tommy Murphy, a radio host who's a big fish in a small pond. He's the top-rated radio personality in a tiny market. In the first episode, we learn his contract is about to expire, and as the story unfolds, we see him become more vulnerable. It's a fascinating character journey," Dave explains, his enthusiasm evident.

From Full House to Live+Local: A Different Kind of Broadcasting

Did your experience playing Joey on Full House help prepare you for this role?

"Not at all! This is a whole different ballgame. It's a real radio show with live guests we Zoom with. They even built us a fully functional radio studio with a working board, and I have to operate it. It was a huge technical challenge for me," Dave admits, laughing at the memory of mastering the equipment.

Comedy Icons Who Shaped Dave’s Career

Who inspired you growing up in Michigan?

"George Carlin and Bill Cosby were huge influences. I used to listen to their records endlessly. Cosby's humor was pure genius, and Carlin's edgy style made us laugh until we cried. If I could convince my parents to stay up late, I'd watch comedians on The Tonight Show. Those nights were pure magic," Dave reminisces fondly.

What made the set of Full House so special?

"From day one, we had an incredible chemistry. We truly loved each other through thick and thin—marriages, divorces, births, deaths, cancellations, and comebacks. That kind of bond is rare in the industry. You either have it or you don’t, and we had it in spades," Dave says with a smile.

Missing Bob: The Legacy of a Legendary Friendship

What do you miss most about Bob?

"Bob and I had countless comedy routines that only we could perform. Those are the moments I miss the most," Dave reflects, his voice tinged with sadness.

When was the last time you spoke to Bob?

"It was his last day on Earth. We were texting back and forth, cracking each other up. The last thing I told him was, 'Hey, have a great show. I love you.' Those words still echo in my heart," Dave says, his voice trembling with emotion.

Coping with Loss: Lessons in Healing

How do you navigate the grief of losing loved ones?

"Losing Bob, my brother, and my dad in such a short span has been overwhelming. It's been tough figuring out how to mourn. One moment I'm grieving my brother, the next I'm thinking about Bob or my dad. It’s a lot to process. But healing takes time, and you have to give yourself permission to feel and heal," Dave advises.

What advice do you have for others dealing with loss?

"Everyone handles grief differently. Be kind to yourself and love yourself through the process. Understanding your emotions is key to moving forward," Dave says gently.

    On Friendship and Forgiveness

How is your relationship with Lori Loughlin?

"Lori and I are the best of friends. I feel for her and the challenges she's faced. We all make mistakes, and she's paid her dues. All I can do is support her and cherish our friendship," Dave says warmly.

Sobriety: A New Chapter in Life

What led you to embrace sobriety?

"I always associated drinking with having a good time. But when I looked closely, I realized alcohol was negatively impacting my relationships, work, and creativity. It took me about a year to get sober. I had to confront my fears, like, 'Will I still be funny?' But sobriety has been a cleansing journey for my soul," Dave shares.

What did you discover about yourself during this journey?

"That I can wake up early! Who would’ve thought?" Dave jokes, his eyes twinkling.

How has your wife supported you?

"She's been my rock every step of the way. We used to enjoy a bottle of wine together every night, but she’s cut back significantly to honor my journey. She's my biggest cheerleader," Dave says with gratitude.

    Looking Ahead: Goals and Dreams

    What’s next for you?

"My wife and I bought land in Michigan and are building a house. We designed it together, and now I want to build it myself. So, I went to contractors school. It doesn’t mean I know what I’m doing, but we start construction next week, and I’m equal parts excited and terrified," Dave says with a laugh.

    The Power of Laughter

Why is comedy so important in tough times?

"Comedy is the ultimate relief valve. The world needs more laughter now more than ever. Without humor, we miss out on so much joy. Let’s all laugh a little more," Dave encourages.
