It wasn’t easy saying goodbye to Good Bones. After eight seasons of flipping homes and inspiring fans, Mina Starsiak Hawk and her audience felt the bittersweet sting of the series’ conclusion. But for cast member MJ Coyle, the decision to end the HGTV show wasn’t exactly surprising. In fact, during a candid conversation on Mina’s podcast, “Mina AF,” MJ admitted he fully understood why the show had to come to an end.
MJ Coyle Opens Up About the Decision to End Good Bones
On Tuesday, October 24, Mina brought up the topic of the show’s conclusion with MJ, asking him if he felt upset about her choice not to continue after season 8. “Absolutely not,” MJ replied without hesitation. “Every fiber of my being recognized and respected that decision. It was the right call.”
But why did MJ feel this way? It turns out, the pressure of producing season after season took its toll on the entire team. The once-joyful set became tense, and the challenges piled up—exhaustion, tight deadlines, and the lingering effects of the pandemic all contributed to the strained atmosphere.

Behind-the-Scenes Struggles: A Team Pushed to the Limit
“It reached a point where our small team wasn’t even enjoying each other’s company anymore,” MJ explained. “We’d been through so much together—COVID, countless seasons, you name it. By the time we wrapped, everyone was burnt out. Physically sore. Emotionally drained. Honestly, it was miserable.”
Mina echoed MJ’s sentiments, recalling how demanding the work became. “At one point, almost all of us were wearing wrist braces on both wrists,” she said. “We were working so hard on these renovations that our bodies couldn’t keep up. It’s hard to stay motivated when even the little things—like having dogs or babies around—stop making you smile.”
Distance Between Cast Members Post-Series
Interestingly, MJ also revealed that he hasn’t stayed in touch with his fellow Good Bones castmates since filming wrapped. “I haven’t spoken to Cory Miller in a long time,” he admitted. “I haven’t talked to Tad [Starsiak], either. I did briefly chat with Karen [E. Laine] when everything wrapped up, but beyond that, no. I think everyone just needed some space, time to heal, and a break from the intensity.”
A Final Episode Filled With Emotion

When Good Bones aired its series finale on October 17, it seemed like a perfect send-off. Mina and her mom, Karen E. Laine, helped renovate Tad’s new Indiana home. The episode culminated in a heartwarming moment as the family gathered to watch Tad propose to Anna Spiars in their newly remodeled kitchen. However, despite the apparent harmony on screen, things weren’t as rosy behind the scenes.
On August 28, Mina opened up about the challenging dynamics within her family. She revealed that she’d distanced herself from both Karen and Tad as she focused on her next chapter with her husband, Steve Hawk. Together, they’re currently working on renovating a lake house, which will star in an upcoming HGTV spinoff show next year. And while MJ may not return as a regular cast member, he’ll still lend a hand for a two-episode special.
What’s Next for Mina and MJ?
“I’m filming the lake house, and MJ pops in from time to time,” Mina shared. “He helps us demolish walls and brainstorm ideas. I’m always experimenting with different concepts to see what sticks. If anything ever does take off, MJ would definitely be one of the first people I’d ask to join me.”
