At 69 years old, Al is savoring every moment with Sky Clara Laga, his first grandchild, who arrived on July 3. Born to his eldest daughter, Courtney Roker, and her husband Wesley Laga, Sky has already become the apple of her grandpa's eye.

Courtney Roker's Excitement About Motherhood
Courtney, 36, couldn’t be more thrilled about expanding her family. In a heartfelt statement to Today, she expressed her joy: “We are incredibly excited to welcome a new member into our family and start this next chapter in our lives. We feel truly blessed and excited for our little miracle.” It’s clear that Sky is already making waves in the Roker household.
Al's Favorite Part of Being a Grandpa

Sky’s First Halloween: A Cloud of Cuteness
For her first Halloween, Sky’s parents dressed her up as a cloud, paying homage to her grandpa's profession. “It’s so sweet, and I’m absolutely thrilled,” Al gushed about the creative costume. Al’s journey as a father began with Courtney during his first marriage to Alice Bell. He’s also the proud dad of Leila and Nicholas, whom he shares with Deborah, 63. Now, as a grandfather, Al’s heart seems fuller than ever.
Just months before becoming a grandfather, Al faced a significant health scare that required him to step away from his duties at Today. Last November, he was hospitalized twice due to blood clots and underwent a grueling seven-hour surgery to resection his colon, remove his gallbladder, and repair part of his small intestine.

“I went in for one operation, but ended up getting four for the price of one,” Al quipped on Today back in January 2023. “So, I guess I got a pretty good deal out of it.”
This year, on his 69th birthday on August 20, Al had plenty to celebrate after overcoming his health challenges and recovering from knee replacement surgery. In an Instagram post, he called Sky the “best birthday present” he could have ever asked for.
“This is my 69th trip around the sun, and after everything I went through at the end of last year, I couldn’t be more grateful to celebrate this birthday,” he said in a video shared on his special day.
