Sky, who was born on July 3 to Al’s daughter Courtney Roker and her husband, Wesley Laga, has already stolen everyone's hearts. In his post, Al expressed how much joy Sky brings into his life. He said she’s the perfect addition to the family, and it’s easy to see why. With a big smile plastered across his face, Al looks like a man who’s living his best life right now. In an Instagram video, Al opened up about his journey. “This is my 69th anniversary of orbiting the sun,” he said with his trademark charm. “And after everything I went through at the end of last year, I am more than grateful to be celebrating this birthday.” Al’s resilience and positive attitude continue to inspire those around him.
Back in November 2022, Al had to take a break from the Today show after dealing with blood clots in his legs and lungs. He was hospitalized twice before making a triumphant return on January 6. When he came back, he told his co-stars, “My heart is just bursting. I’m just so thrilled to see all of you and the crew. Right now, I’m running on adrenaline.” It’s clear that Al’s love for his job and his colleagues runs deep.
More Health Challenges, But Always Moving Forward
In early May, Al faced another health hurdle when he underwent knee replacement surgery. He explained the procedure on Today on May 30, saying, “This was a much more involved operation because they were taking out a knee and then putting a knee back in—put some other stuff in. But that said, it’s coming along well.” Al’s determination and optimism have been nothing short of remarkable throughout these challenges.
Nowadays, Al is savoring every moment he gets to spend with his family, including his wife, Deborah Roberts, and their two younger kids, Leila and Nicholas. Since Sky’s arrival, Al has found himself reflecting on how much his life has changed. He admitted, “The thing is, everyone tells you it’s going to be ‘this thing’ and you don’t know; it’s like when they tell you about having your first child. And then to hold this little girl, knowing almost 35 years ago I held her mom? And here she is, 5 pounds, 15 ounces, 19 inches long and she’s just perfect.” It’s moments like these that remind us of the beauty of family and the joy that comes with new generations.
