Since the series finale of "Good Bones" aired on HGTV back on October 17, Mina Starsiak Hawk's life has been nothing short of transformative. In a candid conversation, the home improvement star revealed that her inner circle has undergone significant changes, as she’s taken the bold step of cutting out certain people from her life. This move, she says, has been crucial in maintaining her mental and emotional well-being.

Building a Solid Support System: The Square Squad

Mina, now 39, drew inspiration from the concept of Brené Brown’s "Square Squad," an idea introduced in Brown's book, "Dare to Lead." This concept encourages individuals to have a small group of people—so small, in fact, that all their names can fit on a 1-inch by 1-inch piece of paper—in whom they can truly be themselves. For Mina, this concept has been a game-changer in reshaping her personal relationships and finding peace in her life.

Mina admitted that narrowing down her inner circle and deciding who truly deserved a spot on her Square Squad wasn’t easy. “It was tricky,” she confessed. “Whittling down the list of people who matter most to me wasn’t something I could do overnight. It took a lot of soul-searching and reflection on my part.”

The Personal and Professional Challenges That Shaped Mina

Throughout her journey, Mina has faced her fair share of personal and professional challenges. There were moments when she questioned everything—her worth, her purpose, her decisions. But through it all, her Square Squad has been her rock. “These people are invaluable to me,” Mina shared. “They’re there for it all, through thick and thin, and they support me without judgment. They’ve seen me at my best and my worst, and they still stand by me.”

When Mina began listing the people whose opinions she truly values, she realized just how long the list had become. “I was like, wow, this is a really long list,” she said. “But as I thought about it more, I realized that not everyone on that list needed to be in my inner circle. I had to make some tough decisions, but in the end, it was the right thing to do for my well-being.”

The People Who Matter Most

Mina named her children, Jack and Charlotte, her husband Steve Hawk, her sister Kelsy, her older brother, her brother’s wife, her close friend Adrienne, her dad, her stepmom, and the kids’ “fake grandma” as the key figures in her life. These are the people whose opinions she cherishes above all others. They are the ones who truly understand her and support her unconditionally.

Notably absent from her list are her mom, Karen E. Laine, and her brother Tad Starsiak. The relationships between Mina, Karen, and Tad have been strained since filming season 8 of "Good Bones," primarily due to tensions on set. Mina spoke openly about the difficulties she faced with her mom during that time. “There were definitely some challenging moments,” she told People in September, referring to a heated argument they had while filming.

A Lifelong Sisterhood

Despite the challenges, Mina remains close with some family members, including her sister Kelsy. The two have shared a close bond for most of their lives, and Kelsy has been a constant source of support for Mina through various stages of her life. They often meet for coffee each week to catch up and chat. “She probably has a pretty good holistic understanding of who I am as a person,” Mina said, tears welling up in her eyes as she spoke of her sister’s unwavering support.

Embracing Change in Her Inner Circle

Mina reflected on the natural evolution of her inner circle as she grows older. “There were times where I had to set boundaries with certain people, even though I thought they might be in my life forever or had been in my life for a long time, who were no longer contributing positively,” she explained. “It’s about putting your mental and emotional health in a good place, and sometimes that means the people you surround yourself with need to change.”
