Let’s talk about Olivia Munn and her incredible journey. Olivia, 43, has been candid about how much her boyfriend, comedian John Mulaney, has been there for her every step of the way during her battle with cancer. And let me tell you, it’s a story that will tug at your heartstrings.
In a recent interview with People, published on April 17, Olivia shared just how much John means to her. “It would’ve felt like climbing an iceberg without him,” she said, emphasizing the importance of his presence in her life during such a challenging time.
Family Ties and Fatherhood
Olivia and John, who welcomed their son Malcolm in November 2021, started dating officially that same year. As Olivia continues to recover from multiple surgeries, she’s been vocal about John’s role as a dedicated father and partner. “I don’t think he had a moment to himself,” she said, describing his tireless efforts to balance being an involved dad and her rock during her recovery.

“Between being an incredibly hands-on father and going to and from the hospital—taking Malcolm to the park, putting him to nap, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, coming back to me—he did it all happily,” Olivia continued, painting a vivid picture of John’s unwavering dedication.
Olivia’s Journey with Breast Cancer
Olivia first shared her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis on March 13 via an emotional Instagram post. The photos in the post showed her in the hospital, but her words were filled with gratitude. “I’m so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this,” she wrote, expressing her appreciation for the support system around her.
She went on to thank John specifically, highlighting the countless nights he spent researching her surgeries and medications. “For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes,” she added, showing just how much his thoughtfulness meant to her.

Olivia has undergone four surgeries so far, including a double mastectomy, a lymph node dissection, a nipple delay procedure, and reconstruction. She’s also started hormone suppression therapy, which has led to medically induced menopause. Despite the challenges, she remains positive. “I’m constantly thinking it’s hot, my hair is thinning, and I’m tired a lot,” she admitted to the outlet, but her spirit remains strong.
Grateful for the Fight
Through everything, Olivia says she’s grateful for the opportunity to fight. As the Newsroom actress watches her son Malcolm, now 2 years old, grow up, she finds immense joy in their time together. “When I’m with him, it’s the only time my brain doesn’t think about being sick,” she reflected. “I’m just so happy with him. And it puts a lot of stuff into perspective.”
“Because if my body changes, I’m still his mom. If I have hot flashes, I’m still his mom. If I lose my hair, I’m still his mom. That’s really what matters the most to me. I get to be here for him,” she concluded, reminding us all of the power of love and resilience.
