It’s been nine long years since home chef and lifestyle guru Sandra Lee last graced our screens with her budget-friendly recipes and clever cooking tips. Her shows, like Semi-Homemade Cooking and Sandra’s Money Saving Meals, became must-watch TV for food enthusiasts and budget-conscious cooks alike. Now, she’s back with a bang, ready to bring her expertise to a new generation of viewers.

“I took a step back to recharge and reflect,” Sandra explains candidly. “I wanted to figure out how I could truly serve people and make a difference in their lives. Cooking is such a personal and powerful way to connect, and I wanted to do it right.”

Her comeback show, Dinner Budget Showdown, premiered on the Roku Channel on May 3, marking the beginning of what Sandra promises will be many exciting projects. At 57, she’s ready to take on the world again, and her fans couldn’t be more thrilled. “This is just the beginning,” she says with a smile. “I’ve got a lot more in store for you!”

When asked about her new show, Sandra dives right in, describing it with the enthusiasm of someone who’s truly passionate about her work. Dinner Budget Showdown pits home cooks against one another in a friendly yet fierce competition. The twist? Contestants must recreate gourmet dishes—like Wagyu beef with handmade noodles—at a fraction of the cost. To top it off, they’re judged by some of the biggest names in the culinary world, including Carla Hall, Joe Sasto, Darrell Smith, and Claudia Sandoval.

The stakes are high, but the rewards are even better. The winner gets a year’s worth of free groceries. “It’s such a fun concept,” Sandra says. “It’s not just about cooking; it’s about being smart, resourceful, and creative. That’s what I love about it.”

Why now? Sandra admits that the pandemic gave her the time and space to reflect on her career and personal life. “We all had so much time off during COVID,” she explains. “It made me think about what kind of content I wanted to create moving forward. I wanted to make something that would resonate with people and help them in their everyday lives.”

Facing Challenges with Grace and Resilience

Over the past few years, Sandra has faced her fair share of challenges. In 2015, she battled breast cancer, a fight that changed her life in profound ways. Then, in 2019, she parted ways with her longtime partner, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, amid rumors of infidelity. Despite these setbacks, Sandra has emerged stronger and more determined than ever.

“It’s been quite the journey,” she reflects. “The breakup was tough for everyone involved. But the cancer diagnosis was the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. Going through treatment was physically and emotionally draining. I remember going to the Emmys after my treatment, and I didn’t realize how much my body had changed until I saw the looks on other people’s faces. It was humbling, but I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come.”

Through it all, Sandra leaned on her inner strength and the support of her loved ones. “My sister was an incredible source of support,” she says. “But I’ve also learned to rely on myself more. I talk to myself in the mirror sometimes, giving myself pep talks or reminding myself to take a break when I need it. It sounds cheesy, but it works!”

Since her cancer diagnosis, Sandra has made significant changes to her lifestyle. “I used to be all about meat and potatoes,” she admits. “But now, I really enjoy salads, vegetables, and smoothies. I’ve learned to listen to my body and give it what it needs. Sleep is also a priority for me now. I used to run myself ragged, but I’ve realized that taking breaks is essential for long-term success.”

She’s also become more aware of the motivations and intentions of those around her. “I’ve gotten better at recognizing when someone has an agenda,” she says. “It’s not about being suspicious; it’s about being informed and protecting yourself.”

    What Keeps Sandra Going?

For Sandra, the driving force behind everything she does is her unshakable belief in the power of possibility. “I grew up on welfare and food stamps,” she recalls. “Now, I have two Emmys and a career I love. Anything is possible if you’re willing to put in the work. My motto has always been, ‘No is not an option.’ There’s nothing we can’t achieve if we set our minds to it.”

    A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Sandra envisions a future filled with meaningful content that goes beyond food. “I want to create content that feeds people’s minds and souls, not just their stomachs,” she says. “Whether it’s cooking tips, lifestyle advice, or personal stories, I want to make a difference in people’s lives.”

On a personal level, Sandra is focused on happiness and embracing whatever life throws her way. “I’m working on being content with who I am and where I am,” she says. “I trust that everything happens for a reason, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
