Céline Dion Opens Up About Determination to Perform Again
Let me tell you something about Céline Dion. This powerhouse of a woman, who's been rocking the music world for decades, hasn’t let her recent diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome (SPS) stop her from dreaming big. After being forced to cancel dozens of concerts, Céline sat down with Hoda Kotb to share her unwavering resolve to get back on stage. No matter what it takes, she’s ready to fight for her passion and her fans.
Hoda Kotb, the ever-gracious interviewer, asked Céline, “What did this disease take away from you?” And let me tell you, Céline’s response was nothing short of inspiring. At 56 years old, she’s not just a singer; she’s a warrior. Her determination shines through every word she speaks.
“It didn’t take anything away from me,” Céline replied, her voice filled with strength and conviction. “I’m going to go back onstage, even if I have to crawl. Even if I have to talk with my hands, I will. I will.” Can you hear the fire in her voice? This is a woman who refuses to give up, no matter what life throws her way.

More Than Just a Voice
Céline continued, “I am Céline Dion, because today my voice will be heard for the first time, not just because I have to, or because I need to. It’s because I want to and I miss it.” Her words are more than just a statement—they’re a promise to herself and her fans. Céline isn’t just singing; she’s living her truth, and that’s something we can all admire.
In December 2022, Céline revealed her diagnosis of SPS, a rare and progressive neurological disorder that causes rigid muscles and painful spasms. In an emotional Instagram video, she shared her struggles, opening up about the challenges she’s faced. “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through,” she confessed.
She explained further, “While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having. Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.” Can you imagine how hard that must have been for her? Yet, here she is, ready to take it all on with grace and courage.

Canceling the Courage World Tour
Because of her condition, Céline had no choice but to cancel her 2023 and 2024 Courage World Tour. In her video message, she shared, “All I know is singing. It’s what I’ve done all my life and it’s what I love to do the most. I miss you so much. I miss seeing all of you, being on the stage performing for you. I always give a hundred percent when I do my shows, but my condition is now allowing me to give you that right now.”
In her interview with Hoda, Céline gave insight into what it feels like to sing with SPS. “It’s like somebody is strangling you. It’s like somebody is pushing your larynx/pharynx this way,” she said, demonstrating the difficulty. “It was like talking like that, and you cannot go high or lower. It gets into a spasm. It can also be in the abdominal, can be in the spine, can be in the ribs. But it feels like if I point my feet, they will stay in a (stuck position), or if I cook — because I love to cook — my fingers, my hands will get in a position.”
Looking Ahead
Céline’s full interview with Hoda aired on NBC on June 11 at 10 p.m. ET. Fans can also look forward to her Prime Video documentary about her SPS called I Am: Céline Dion, set to release on June 25. This is a woman who continues to inspire us all with her resilience and love for life.
