In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Gabrielle Union has taken on the role of homeschooling her husband Dwyane Wade’s 12-year-old daughter, Zaya. But let me tell you, it's not as easy as it sounds. Gabrielle, 47, opened up about her experience, revealing that Zaya doesn’t exactly trust her or her dad when it comes to checking her homework. Instead, she prefers waiting for her tutors. During an appearance on The Tonight Show: At Home Edition, Gabrielle laughed as she told host Jimmy Fallon, “She’s like, ‘I’ll wait for my tutors.’” And honestly, Zaya might be onto something. When asked about her understanding of the new math curriculum, Gabrielle hilariously admitted, “I wasn’t even solid on the old math!”
A Day in the Life with Kaavia
Gabrielle and Dwyane’s 18-month-old daughter, Kaavia James, is growing up fast. Gabrielle shared a sweet moment with the audience, saying, “Today, she said ‘purple,’ so I feel like we’re making headway.” It’s clear that Kaavia is developing quickly, and it won’t be long before she’s speaking in full sentences. Gabrielle, who shares Kaavia with Dwyane, also acts as a stepmom to his other children—Zaya, Zaire, 18, and Xavier, 6, from his previous relationships. Thanks to Dwyane’s years of parenting experience, Gabrielle has learned a lot about taking care of Kaavia. She explained, “He’s been a parent literally half his adult life. So, especially when she first arrived, I deferred to him, because he’s a vet. There’s only so much reading that one can do, so I very much followed his lead.”
Growing Together: Learning from Zaya
Gabrielle and Dwyane have also been on a journey of learning and growth alongside Zaya. Zaya recently came out as transgender, and her parents have been working hard to unlearn outdated ideas about gender identity and expression. Gabrielle said, “Zaya had identified as gender nonconforming. And so we really worked a lot on unlearning so much of what we thought we knew about identity and gender expression and gender norms.” She continued, “We put so much effort into raising her differently and not trying to predetermine who she was.” It’s clear that Gabrielle and Dwyane are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all their children.

A Beautiful Journey
Gabrielle and Dwyane’s family life is filled with love, laughter, and learning. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Gabrielle describes their journey as a beautiful one. She told People, “It’s been a beautiful journey.” And who could disagree? The couple’s dedication to their children and their willingness to grow and learn alongside them is truly inspiring.
