Let's talk about 'Good Bones,' shall we? The beloved home renovation show wrapped up its eighth season in October 2023 with an emotional farewell. Fans were left wondering if the show was truly over for good. But here's the twist—HGTV dropped a bombshell about the future of the series. So, what's really going on? Let's break it down.
What Went Down in Season 8 of 'Good Bones'?
Season 8 of 'Good Bones' wasn't just about renovating homes; it was a rollercoaster of emotions and drama. Mina Starsiak Hawk, one of the show's stars, announced that this would be the final season during the filming process in August 2023. But hold up, there’s more to the story. Behind the scenes, things were heating up. Mina revealed that there was a major clash during a demolition scene with her mom, Karen E. Laine, and tensions were high with project manager Cory Miller.
Mina opened up about the drama in September 2023, telling People, “I was like, ‘I wonder if anyone’s going to be able to tell.’ And of course, you can’t because that’s the idea. People tune in to watch 'Good Bones' for the renovations, not the behind-the-scenes drama. That's not why they're here.”

But the season wasn’t all drama. In the heartwarming finale, Mina’s brother, Tad Starsiak, popped the question to Anna Spiars in their newly renovated home. Tad couldn’t hold back the tears during this emotional moment, and the entire 'Good Bones' crew was there to celebrate.
Still, Mina admitted things weren’t all rosy off-screen. She revealed on her "Mina AF" podcast that her relationships with her mom and siblings were strained. “My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind of nonexistent place,” she said. “It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much, and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”

Thankfully, Mina shared that she's patched things up with her brother William. She's also looking forward to a new chapter with a spinoff show focused on her lake house with her husband, Steve Hawk. “What I know right now is [the] first phase we are filming for a two-episode spinoff, and it’s been really fun so far,” Mina explained. “Steve’s involved a lot, the kids are there a lot, MJ [Coyle] and Austin [Aynes] are there for demo and it just kind of feels like getting back to when I started, and it was just really fun and everything was joyful.”
Meanwhile, Karen has her sights set on a new project in Wilmington, North Carolina. She shared her excitement with the Indianapolis Business Journal, saying, “After eight years of doing 'Good Bones,' I love our production company. They are amazingly talented people. They have taught me so much. I don’t want to stop working with them. I would like to work with them until I die because they’re wonderful. HGTV has been wonderful to us. If I could create content for HGTV until I die, that would be a dream come true.”
Is 'Good Bones' Making a Comeback?
Fast forward to July 2024, and fans got some exciting news: 'Good Bones' is coming back for a special limited season. HGTV announced that Mina and Karen’s beloved show would return with a fresh twist.
“The newest season of HGTV’s hit series 'Good Bones' will follow Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mom Karen E Laine as their lives evolve past their time renovating homes in Indianapolis,” HGTV said in a press release. “Mina will purchase a very dated but ‘groovy’ lake house just north of Indy and give it much-needed cosmetic updates to create the peaceful family getaway of her dreams. Karen will set off on a new adventure in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she’ll risk her retirement nest egg on a bungalow that requires more work than anticipated to become a colorful beachy oasis. Their new beginnings will play out across a limited three-week run.”
