There’s something deeply moving about watching friendship in action, especially when it involves someone as iconic as Shannen Doherty. As she faces her second battle with cancer—this time diagnosed as stage IV breast cancer—her long-time pal and co-star Brian Austin Green isn’t stepping back. Instead, he’s stepping up in a big way. At the Annual Open Hearts Gala on February 15, Brian opened up about Shannen’s recent relapse, sharing his unwavering support for her.
A Heartfelt Message from Brian Austin Green
Brian, who’s no stranger to tough situations himself, spoke candidly with Us Weekly about Shannen’s battle. “I don’t want to speak too much on her behalf, but it’s a really hard situation,” he admitted. “Cancer is not easy for anyone—it’s brutal. But Shannen is one of the strongest people I know. She’s been through so much, and she’s always come out stronger. I truly believe she’ll get through this, too, and come out with exactly what she’s supposed to learn from it.”
Adversity Only Makes Us Stronger
Brian’s words didn’t stop there. He went on to express his admiration for Shannen, saying, “Adversity has a way of making us stronger—if we let it. And with Shannen, there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s going to come out of this even more resilient. She’s an incredible person, and she deserves all the love and support she’s getting. The world needs more people like her.” It’s clear that Brian isn’t just paying lip service; he genuinely cares for his friend and wants to see her thrive, no matter the challenges.

Shannen Opens Up About Her Battle
Just weeks before Brian’s heartfelt remarks, Shannen, now 54, revealed her battle with terminal breast cancer after three years of remission. During an emotional appearance on Good Morning America, she shared details of her relapse, which she had kept private for months. The only person she confided in was Brian, who reassured her with words of encouragement. “Prior to shooting, he would always call me and say, ‘Listen, whatever happens, I’ve got your back,’” Shannen recalled. “He’d look at me and say, ‘We’ve got this, kiddo.’”
Since making her diagnosis public, Shannen has been candid about her journey, including the emotional toll it’s taken on her. In a recent Instagram post, she wrote, “I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers, and support. It’s a strange time right now, and I feel like I’m standing on shaky ground. To say I’m stressed is an understatement. To say I’m struggling is putting it mildly. But… I believe I’ll find my footing again. I’ll dig deep for the strength I need to face this. I pray I can handle it all with dignity and grace.”
