Hoda Kotb, the beloved Today show host, has built an incredible life for herself and her two daughters, Haley and Hope, in the bustling heart of New York City. However, as life evolves, so do our needs. Recently, Hoda made the bold decision to leave her long-time Manhattan apartment behind and embrace a fresh start in the suburbs. During a heartfelt conversation on an episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, she opened up about this significant life change, explaining why it was time to say goodbye to the city life she’s known for years.
At the age of 60, Hoda Kotb is proving that change is always possible, no matter your stage in life. On a Wednesday episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna aired on August 14, she revealed how she’s been preparing for this move with her daughters, packing up their lives and getting ready for what lies ahead. This isn't just a move—it’s a new chapter filled with excitement and anticipation.
Clearing Out the Past to Make Way for the Future
Hoda shared her philosophy on moving and starting anew with co-host Jenna Bush Hager. “You gotta clear out. You can’t have something new if you’re clinging to old stuff,” she explained. It’s a lesson that applies to so much in life. “Clear it out. Say goodbye. Your kids only need this box of all their keepsakes,” she added. It’s not just about physical belongings—it’s about embracing change, letting go of the past, and making room for growth.

When Jenna expressed surprise that Hoda didn’t plan to take time off work during the move, Hoda reassured her, “It’s all going to work out.” Jenna, the former first daughter, chimed in, emphasizing the importance of planning. But Hoda laughed it off, saying, “They do. It’s too late. Too late.” Despite the whirlwind, Hoda’s positivity and determination were evident.
Jenna Offers a Helping Hand
Even in the midst of her own busy schedule, Jenna Bush Hager extended a helping hand, offering to assist Hoda with unpacking at her new place. “What are friends for?” Jenna quipped, showing the camaraderie and support that makes their show so special. It’s moments like these that remind us how important it is to lean on those we trust during life’s big transitions.
A "Repotting" Phase in Life
In a candid moment during her “Making Space” podcast, Hoda reflected on the move, calling it a “repotting phase” in her life. “I just feel it. I feel like my roots need a bigger pot, in all kinds of ways,” she said. Moving isn’t just about changing addresses—it’s about creating space for personal growth and new opportunities. For Hoda, this move represents a chance to give her daughters the kind of life she envisions for them—a life filled with independence, exploration, and joy.

Hoda, who shares her daughters Haley and Hope with her ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman, spoke about the charm of her new home. “When I found this spot that I liked, a little town that had all the things that could teach my kids independence, I told my kids, ‘We’re repotting.’ They’re like, ‘What? We’re moving?’ I go, ‘Yeah, but we’re repotting,’” she explained. It’s a metaphor that perfectly captures the essence of this transition.
Explaining "Repotting" to Her Daughters
Curious about what their mother meant by “repotting,” Haley, 7, and Hope, 4, asked for clarification. Hoda elaborated, “It’s when you pull yourself up by the roots. And you’re a little scared, right?” The girls nodded, understanding the fear that comes with change. Hoda continued, “But then we’ll go back into really great soil. We’re going to grow bigger and stronger. That’s going to be the place.”
This move from city life to the suburbs is a big leap for the family, but Hoda is excited for her children to experience new adventures. “I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, and play in the yard, and ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs,” she told People on August 12. “I just see that life for them in this perfect house in this beautiful little town where I know they’ll be able to blossom into beautiful, independent, strong women.”
