Tom Selleck Pens Alternate Ending For Frank Reagan On 'Blue Bloods'

What’s Coming for Frank Reagan in the ‘Blue Bloods’ Finale?

As fans eagerly anticipate the ‘Blue Bloods’ series finale airing on Friday, December 13, the curtain is about to drop on Tom Selleck’s iconic character, Frank Reagan. But before we get to that, Selleck himself revealed an alternate ending he envisioned for his character, one that gives us a peek into what could’ve been. This little twist, by the way, might just be a spoiler in itself.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly just ahead of the finale, Selleck opened up about his thoughts on how Frank Reagan’s journey might conclude. “I thought about that,” he shared. “I didn’t really have input into where the show was headed for its final episode. In my alternate ending, I imagined Frank Reagan as a man who remains alone, someone who never really wanted the job he had, but has this overwhelming sense of responsibility. I think he’d be commissioner until he drops.”

Kevin Wade’s Vision for Frank Reagan

This revelation is particularly interesting when you consider what showrunner Kevin Wade had previously said about Frank’s future. Wade made it clear that, in his mind, Frank was never someone who’d step down. “I’m pretty sure Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” Wade told TV Insider back in May. “The show is fundamentally built around him being the police commissioner of New York City. Taking a detour in the final stretch would’ve been a tough call. What would he be doing? Hanging out at the hardware store or sipping coffee with old buddies? No, Frank is the CEO of a 35,000-strong police force, and that’s where the stories are generated.”

Now, as we gear up for the ‘Blue Bloods’ finale, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether we’ll get some closure on whether Frank is actually looking to retire. It’s a cliffhanger that’s been hanging in the air, and fans are dying to know how it’ll all shake out.

Donnie Wahlberg’s Wish: Another 14 Seasons

Meanwhile, Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan, also shared his own alternate ending, which unsurprisingly involves the show continuing indefinitely. “I would have Danny Reagan walk right into the next episode of ‘Blue Bloods,’ and we’d do another 14 seasons. That’s my dream,” he joked.

But in all seriousness, Wahlberg went on to elaborate on his vision for Danny’s future. “Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’d love to see Danny step into a new chapter of his life, maybe somewhere else, doing something similar, but with someone from the current cast. I’d want him to stay close to the family, though. Maybe he could explore what life has in store for him now that his boys have grown up and moved on, and he’s dealing with the empty nest syndrome. Perhaps he could find a new path on his own, but one where he can still visit the family occasionally. Does that sound like a spinoff tease?”

    Hope for a Spinoff?

When asked about the possibility of a spinoff, Wahlberg, 55, admitted that while wrapping up the show in June was emotional, he’s hopeful there’s more to come for the franchise. “It feels like I’m reading a movie script, negotiating a deal, walking to my agent’s office, but I keep looking back over my shoulder, hoping someone from ‘Blue Bloods’ is chasing me down the street saying, ‘Wait, we’re doing one more season!’” Wahlberg told Variety on December 12. “In most TV shows, by the 14th year, people are running for the exits. But we’re all looking forward to what’s next. Still, I think every one of us has that feeling of turning back, hoping someone’s there to say, ‘Don’t sign that contract. Wait a minute!’”
