A New Chapter Amidst Controversy

Back in 2012, Savannah Guthrie’s world turned upside down when she received the life-changing news that she would be stepping into the role of coanchor on Today. The move came with its fair share of drama, as it followed the unexpected departure of beloved anchor Ann Curry. In a candid interview with Parade, Savannah, now 53, reflected on the challenging period and how it shaped her career.

"I came into this role during a very turbulent time for the show," Savannah shared during a joint interview with Craig Melvin, published on January 17, 2023. "It wasn’t a happy moment for anyone, including me. I was absolutely terrified because the decision had already been made by the higher-ups, and I was the last one to know. I was genuinely afraid that I wouldn’t be able to hold my ground in such a high-pressure environment."

Dreams Realized, but Not Without Doubt

Before joining the main desk, Savannah was already a familiar face on the show, hosting the third hour. She admitted that she felt her career had already reached its peak. "All my dreams had come true," she said. "I didn’t think it could get any better than that. But when the opportunity arose, it was both thrilling and terrifying."

  • The decision to replace Ann Curry was reportedly driven by a desire to boost ratings, which had been declining. Former NBC News President Steve Capus praised Savannah’s appointment, saying, "In just a few short years, Savannah has become an indispensable member of the news division. Her versatility and trustworthiness have earned her the respect of colleagues and viewers alike. I’m thrilled for her and the entire Today team."

    A Rollercoaster of Emotions

Despite the praise, Savannah revealed that she initially doubted her ability to thrive in the new role. "When I was offered the position, I cried," she confessed. "Not because I didn’t aspire to this job, but because I was certain it wouldn’t last. I thought I’d be out within weeks or months. Thankfully, I proved myself wrong and managed to stay."

Ann Curry Reflects on Her Departure

Years after Savannah’s promotion, Ann Curry, now 68, spoke openly about her sudden exit from the show. In an interview with Elle in September 2020, she admitted, "I still don’t fully understand what happened. I know I did nothing wrong, and I believe I excelled at my job."

"They say where there’s smoke, there’s fire," Ann added. "But as a fact-based reporter, it’s hard for me to speculate without concrete evidence. I don’t know all the reasons behind it, but I’ve learned to move forward."

After leaving Today, Ann continued working with NBC until 2015. Reflecting on her journey, she told People in January 2018, "I can honestly say that I’m stronger, smarter, and happier now. My compassion has grown, and through the pain, I’ve emerged better than before."

    Looking Ahead with Craig Melvin

Savannah continues to anchor Today, now alongside Craig Melvin, who joined her on January 13, following Hoda Kotb’s departure. "We’re sad to see Hoda go," Savannah said. "But we’re thrilled to have Craig stepping in. He’s absolutely perfect for the role, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with him."
