Let’s talk about something that’s got people buzzing. Sally Struthers, the beloved actress known for her role in All in the Family, recently shared some candid thoughts about the late icon Betty White. Now, Sally didn’t exactly pull any punches. She revealed that Betty, who many adored as a warm and funny person, once made a pretty harsh comment that left Sally feeling less than great.

Sally, who’s now 77 years old, shared this story during an episode of the podcast “Let’s Talk About That! With Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellott.” The podcast aired on January 13, 2023. Betty White, as we all know, passed away on December 21, 2021, just shy of her 100th birthday. Sally felt it was finally okay to share her experience now that Betty is gone.

Sally’s Encounter with Betty White

Sally explained the situation in detail. She recounted visiting Betty’s house to work on a pilot for a new game show. As they sat there, Betty asked her housekeeper to bring some snacks for everyone. When the food arrived, it was a plate of cookies placed right in the middle of the table. Sally, like anyone else, reached for a cookie, but what happened next caught her off guard.

  • Betty, in front of everyone else in the room, said to Sally, “Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you dear, you don’t need a cookie.” Ouch. Sally described this moment as a clear example of being "fat-shamed." She couldn’t believe Betty would say something so blunt and unkind in front of others.

Sally went on to explain how the hosts of the podcast were equally surprised by the story. “Totally fat-shamed me in front of the rest of the people in the room,” Sally continued. “And I thought, ‘Gosh, that’s not nice.’”

    Sally’s Perspective on Betty White

It’s worth noting that Sally’s experience with Betty White was quite different from the image many people had of her. Sally admitted that she knew Betty was adored by millions. Fans even petitioned for her to guest host Saturday Night Live, and she became a symbol of kindness and humor for so many. But Sally’s interaction left her with a different impression.

“I know everybody loves her. They loved her so much,” Sally shared. “They signed petitions to get her to guest host Saturday Night Live. I know all that. I didn’t have such a great experience with her.” Sally described Betty as “a very passive-aggressive woman,” which, according to her, explained Betty’s behavior during that encounter.

    Sally’s Tribute to Bea Arthur

Despite her experience with Betty, Sally had nothing but praise for another iconic actress: Bea Arthur. Sally and Bea lived in the same neighborhood in Brentwood, California, and would often bump into each other at the supermarket. Bea, who passed away in 2009 after battling lung cancer, had a unique sense of humor that Sally greatly appreciated.

“I would run into her at the supermarket, and she would trash everyone we ever knew,” Sally recalled, laughing as she remembered the moments they shared. “I loved how filthy she was.” Sally added, “She was a big deal. I loved her.”
