Growing Up in the Wilds of Montana
Q: In doing some initial research about you, we’ve noticed that your career path has been anything but conventional. From a successful Wall Street investor to a celebrated fashion designer and recording artist, it’s fascinating to learn that you grew up in the backwoods of Montana. Tell us about your upbringing.
Skye: Believe it or not, my childhood was far from glamorous. I grew up in the mountains of Montana, where our first home was a log cabin without running water. Our restroom was an outdoor "outhouse" that my dad adorned with flocked gold and silver wallpaper samples. I was a true tomboy with a girly flair. During recess, I'd be out there playing soccer with the boys, always wearing my frilly dresses. Fashion was my passion even as a little girl.
My father, Craig, opened a gift shop in the 1970s on the main street of the small town of Whitefish, Montana, where we lived. From a young age, I worked in his store, Crystal Winters, while juggling three other jobs. I bussed tables, worked as a waitress and hostess at our town’s Mexican restaurant, and even spent Sundays at the local CD shop. Those early experiences taught me the value of hard work and determination.
My parents divorced when I was very young, and my dad became my rock. He instilled in me the importance of standing on my own two feet and pursuing my dreams. His words have stayed with me: “I may not always be here, so it’s important for you to fulfill your own destiny.” Those formative years in Montana shaped my tenacity and drive, ultimately bringing me to where I am today.
From Wall Street to Fashion: A Journey of Passion
Q: How did you transition into biotech investments on Wall Street? What was your route?

Skye: My journey into biotech was anything but straightforward. I attended Wellesley College on a full scholarship, including a book scholarship because I couldn’t afford the textbooks. When I graduated, I considered joining the Peace Corps, but financial institutions were recruiting on campus. I joined Putnam Investments, starting in a call center, which is like the mailroom of the financial world. Through determination and informational interviews, I became the first person in Putnam's history to move from operations to the investment division.
In the late 90s, during the genomic boom, I followed my passion for innovation. I moonlighted at the Whitehead Institute, assisting in oncology research, while working as a research analyst. Over 22 years in biopharma, I became a partner at my last firm and one of the largest global investors in biopharma. I served as a Partner & Senior BioPharma Investment Analyst at Capital Group, Senior Analyst at Lord, Abbett & Co., Global Head of Healthcare at Credit Suisse Asset Management, and Analyst at New Vernon Associates & Putnam Investments. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors of ASAF Angels.

Skye: Let’s just say, there were too many wardrobe malfunctions with the traditional backless bras (sticky bras). As a 34C, I needed a bra that provided reliable support, even when I danced, sweated, or breathed. A miracle bra like that didn’t exist, so I invented it and secured a global patent. Q: Tell us about the launch event for Bareback intimates at Calamigos Ranch. How would you describe the night?
Skye: It was an unforgettable evening. I was thrilled to showcase new additions to my Bareback women’s and men’s intimates line. Guests enjoyed performances by violinist Esther Anaya and DJ duo FOREALISM. Special guests included Nick Cooper from American Idol, Darius Coleman, winner of NBC’s Songland, and music artist Maejor. Actors Lisa Ann Walters and Jason Lewis, along with supermodel Liz Godwin, also attended.
