Josh Brolin's Bold Move: Ready To Quit Acting If Denis Villeneuve Misses Oscar Nod

Josh Brolin threatens to quit acting over Oscars snub

Let me tell you something about Josh Brolin. This guy isn’t just another Hollywood actor; he’s a man who speaks his mind, and he’s not afraid to put it all out there. In a recent interview with Variety, Brolin made a bold statement about his future in show business. It’s all tied to whether or not his director, Denis Villeneuve, gets the Oscar nomination he deserves this year.

Why Josh Brolin’s Loyalty to Denis Villeneuve Runs Deep

Josh Brolin, known for his role in The Avengers: Endgame, isn’t holding back when it comes to his admiration for Denis Villeneuve. After delivering a powerful performance as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part 2 earlier this year, the 56-year-old actor expressed his hopes that the Academy would recognize Villeneuve’s brilliance. If you recall, Denis was overlooked for a Best Director nomination for the first Dune installment back in 2021, and Brolin isn’t letting history repeat itself without a fight.

The Bold Threat: Quitting Acting if Denis Doesn’t Get Nominated

Here’s the kicker: Josh told Variety, “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting.” That’s right—quit acting. Now, that’s a pretty bold statement, but it shows just how much faith and respect Brolin has for Villeneuve. He believes Dune: Part 2 is even better than the first movie, and watching it felt like “my brain was broken open.” He went on to say, “It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”

Oscar nominations are set to be announced on January 17, 2025, and the 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025. As of right now, Variety predicts that Dune: Part 2 could earn a Best Picture nomination, but they’re not so sure about Denis getting a Best Director nod. Of course, predictions can change as we get closer to the big day.

Brolin’s Exciting Role in Knives Out 3

While all eyes are on the Oscars, Josh is also gearing up for his role in Knives Out 3, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, set to release next year. Believe it or not, Brolin was already a huge fan of the first two movies in the franchise before landing a role in the Rian Johnson-directed sequel.

At a New York Comic Con event in October, Josh shared his thoughts on the franchise. “I loved the acting in both of them. I preferred the first one, and the third one felt more like the first one,” he said. He went on to praise Rian Johnson, saying, “He doesn’t come off as this, but he has this incredible control over his set. You know, he just has a major presence that reminds me of Denis, that reminds me of the Cohens, that reminds me of those types of directors. And he’s a great writer.”

Josh was blown away by the script when he first read it. “I read it and I was just like, ‘God, this is so well written. We just don’t read things like this anymore,’” he said. But let’s be honest, even great scripts can be intimidating.

“I was scared,” Josh admitted to Variety. “I read it and I was like, ‘This is so elevated.’ This writing is supreme. And I got scared. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m good enough to do this. I don’t know if I can portray all these subtleties in a way that’s organic and authentic.’ But I prepped a lot and got ready for it. That would have all looked very different had I been drinking. I don’t know if I could have done it.”

    Josh Brolin’s Journey to Sobriety

Josh’s comments about his acting career come after the release of his new memoir, From Under the Truck: A Memoir, where he dives deep into the highs and lows of his career, including his battles with drugs and alcohol. In the book, he writes, “I was born to drink. I was birthed to drink. My mother drank exactly like I did, and I was raised to be a man and drink like the male equivalent of my mother.”
