Jennifer Morrison Opens Up About Her Passion for Acting and Directing

When it comes to picking her favorite TV role, Jennifer Morrison finds it tough to single out just one. With a career spanning some of the most beloved shows on television, she’s had the chance to play a wide range of characters. “Choosing between House, Once Upon a Time, How I Met Your Mother, and This Is Us is impossible,” she told Closer. “Each of them holds a special place in my heart for different reasons.”

From House to Yellowjackets: A Career in Demand

At 45, Jennifer Morrison’s resume is packed with hit television shows, proving she's one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents. Recently, she reunited with This Is Us co-star Justin Hartley on Tracker, and she’s also directing an episode of the third season of Yellowjackets. “Yellowjackets is such a unique and groundbreaking show,” Jennifer says. “Every director dreams of working on something this special, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity.”

This Is Us Fans Were Thrilled to See You and Justin Hartley on Tracker. How Did That Happen?

“It was Justin’s idea, actually,” Jennifer shares. “We had such a great time working together on This Is Us, and we just clicked on set. In this industry, it’s rare to find colleagues who you genuinely care about, respect, and admire. Justin is one of those people, and I jumped at the chance to work with him again.”

“I believe my character is set to return this season,” Jennifer reveals. “And they’ve even invited me to direct an episode, which is incredibly exciting. Directing is something I’ve always been passionate about, and it’s a dream come true to take on that role in a show I love so much.”

From Acting to Directing: A Dual Career Path

While Jennifer may be best known for her acting, she’s always had a deep interest in directing. “I’ve actually had two careers developing side by side,” she explains. “Back in my hometown, I directed community theater productions. When I moved to Los Angeles, I directed plays in small black box theaters, and I absolutely loved it. But then I landed the role on House, and that became my life for a while.”

How Were You Cast on House?

“I’ll never forget how I got the role on House,” Jennifer recalls with a laugh. “I auditioned for the part of Dr. Allison Cameron, and my hair was dark because I was working on Mr. & Mrs. Smith at the time. When I left the audition room, Bryan Singer, who was part of the casting process, said, ‘That’s the girl.’ But then he noticed my blonde audition tape and said, ‘I also like this blonde girl. Let’s test her.’ And they were like, ‘Bryan, that’s also Jennifer!’ So, I was competing against myself for the job, which was pretty funny.”

    Favorite Memories from Iconic Shows

Once Upon a Time: Building Neverland

One of Jennifer’s most cherished experiences was working on the Peter Pan storyline in Once Upon a Time. “That was the first half of Season 3, and they built an entire Neverland set on stage,” she says. “It was such a fun season because so many of us were involved in the storyline. It felt like going to work with your best friends every day, creating something truly magical together.”

How I Met Your Mother: The Booth

Jennifer was a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother before joining the cast. “When I got to the set, I was like, ‘Can I just sit in THE booth?’ And they were like, ‘What booth?’ And I was like, ‘THE booth at MacLaren’s Pub where the characters hang out.’” She laughs. “Coming from a very serious show like House, it was such a joy to be part of a show where my job was to make people laugh and smile every day.”

This Is Us: A Memorable Wedding

“My first scenes on This Is Us were shot in the desert outside Los Angeles, where we were portraying Afghanistan,” Jennifer recalls. “It was so hot, and the gear was heavy, but it was an intense and rewarding way to start that show. One of the most unforgettable moments was being at Kate’s second wedding. It was the first time I got to be with the entire cast, including Mandy Moore. There was a scene where Mandy, playing an older Rebecca, sang a song, and it was breathtaking. I couldn’t stop crying—it was just so emotional.”

    Balancing Career and Personal Life

“The joys of what I do far outweigh any sacrifices I’ve made,” Jennifer reflects. “But the nature of this industry doesn’t always allow for a traditional 9-to-5 schedule. Balancing work with family life can be tricky, especially when you’re spending 12 to 14 hours a day on set. It’s a challenge many of us face as we strive to be good parents, siblings, or partners while pursuing our careers.”

    Health and Wellness: Managing Migraines

“I suffer from ocular migraines, which can be disorienting because they affect my vision for about 20 to 25 minutes,” Jennifer explains. “The first time it happened, I thought I was having a stroke. Thankfully, I was able to get a proper diagnosis. Changing my diet has significantly reduced the frequency of these migraines, and it’s been a game-changer
