Hey there, friends. Let’s talk about Amy Grant, the legendary contemporary Christian singer who faced a major setback in her life but came out stronger on the other side. In July 2022, Amy was enjoying a peaceful bike ride near the Harpeth Hills Golf Course in Nashville when she hit a pothole, lost control, and fell off her bike. Now, here’s the thing—this wasn’t just any spill. The Grammy-winning artist was knocked unconscious for nearly ten minutes before help arrived. Thankfully, she was wearing her helmet, which likely saved her life.

How Did Amy Grant’s Bike Accident Happen?

Picture this: Amy's out for a leisurely bike ride with a friend, soaking in the beauty of Nashville. Everything seems perfect until—bam!—she hits an unexpected pothole. The impact was so severe that she was unconscious for close to ten minutes. An ambulance rushed her to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed her with a concussion and multiple cuts and abrasions. Through it all, her husband, the legendary Vince Gill, kept fans updated on her condition. During an August 2022 concert, Vince reassured the crowd, saying, “My bride, Amy, is doing fine. Thank God she was wearing her helmet.”

It wasn’t long before Amy herself broke her silence. Exactly one month after the accident, she posted an emotional message on Instagram. “I want to say thank you to everyone who has written me a note, sent flowers or gifts, or said a prayer on my behalf,” she wrote. “I’m one month into a recovery that has held so many unexpected hidden gifts. On the advice of my doctors and other friends who have been through similar experiences of recovery, I am choosing to give myself the gift of a very simple fall season. I look forward to making music with Michael W. and Vince during the Christmas season. With deep appreciation and joy…. xo Amy.”

A few months after her accident, Amy returned to the stage for her Christmas tour with Michael W. Smith. She admitted that while she was thrilled to be back performing, she was still dealing with the lingering effects of her injuries. In a January 2023 interview with People, she opened up about the challenges of recovering from a head injury. “They said it could take 12 to 18 months to fully recover from a head injury,” she reflected. “Every once in a while, I’ll be talking to someone, and they’ll say something that I guess I used to know, and I’ll gasp and go, ‘Are you kidding me?’”

She shared a poignant story about memory loss with E! News. “I was at dinner the other night with a high school friend,” she recounted. “We used to spend the night at each other’s houses. I said, ‘I’m embarrassed to ask you, are you and your husband still together?’ She said that Douglas died seven years ago, and it was like I had just heard it for the first time.”

Amy also revealed that she had to rely on a teleprompter to remember song lyrics during her performances. Despite these challenges, she remained optimistic. “Six months in, so I feel really good!” she shared. “I anticipate just getting better.”

What Surgery Did Amy Grant Have?

While recovering from her bike accident, Amy faced another health hurdle. During a vocal session, she noticed something unusual in her throat. “I was working with a vocalist, and she said, ‘What is happening in your throat? Lean your head back,’” Amy recalled during a March 2023 interview on Today. “And I said, ‘I know. It’s like I’ve got an Adam’s apple that keeps getting bigger.’ Unbeknownst to me, I’d had a thyroglossal duct cyst.”

The Georgia native underwent surgery to remove the cyst. This news came nearly two years after Amy had open-heart surgery to correct a birth defect that caused one side of her heart to enlarge. Through it all, she has maintained a remarkably positive outlook. “I feel fantastic,” she said. “I mean, really from 2020 on, I feel like … if I were a car, I’ve made a lot of trips to the shop. And I feel like I’m emerging. I went, ‘Oh man, I feel like a classic now.’ And actually, sort of re-revved up in a really beautiful way.”

Over time, Amy’s memory issues have improved. “I would just say, ‘What if I’m never all the way back?’ Because my processing was so slow. I could be in the room with people, but I didn’t have a comeback,” she told People in November 2024. “But whatever memory issues I have now, I think are age appropriate. I’m about to be 64. So I’m just going, ‘I’m right on time.’”
