Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson recently visited the site of his $14.5 million Malibu mansion, which was tragically destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire last week. Known for his role in Lethal Weapon, Gibson opened up about the devastating loss and the emotional toll it’s taken on him.

Gibson Surveys the Ashes of His Family Home

At 69 years old, Mel Gibson took a somber ride through the neighborhood on a firetruck, eventually arriving at the site where his cherished family home once stood. This poignant moment was captured in photos obtained by several outlets, showcasing the actor's emotional connection to the place he called home for over a decade.

“My Place Looked Like Dresden”

In an interview with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, Gibson described the scene of destruction, saying, “My place looked like Dresden. It’s emotional. I lived there for about 14, 15 years, so it was home to me. I had a lot of personal things there that I can’t get back. All kinds of stuff. Everything from photographs to files, to personal items I’ve accumulated over the years, and clothing, and cool stuff.”

  • Gibson continued, “There were about a dozen places or so that were just non-existent. I mean, nothing but a chimney and a few roof tiles remained. You dare not walk around because of the nails and the entire scene. The vehicles were gone, everything.”

What Was Saved Before the Flames Consumed It All?

During an appearance on Fox News, Gibson was asked about what he and his family managed to salvage before the fire swept through their home and neighborhood. “Not much,” he admitted. “A few necessary things.”

Gibson explained that his son “grabbed like three things and took off.” They managed to take some essentials like “passports and a couple of papers,” but ultimately, “there was essentially nothing left” after the house was consumed by the flames.

Gibson, a father of nine children, has shared his life with various partners over the years. He has kids Hannah, Edward, Christian, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas with ex-wife Robyn Moore Gibson, daughter Lucia with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, and his youngest child, son Lars, with current girlfriend Rosalind Ross, whom he met in 2017.

    On Fire, Family, and Faith

During an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Gibson recalled knowing the neighborhood was on fire and that he was "in the path." Yet, he found solace in the fact that his family was safe and out of harm’s way. “I knew the neighborhood was on fire and that I was in the path, but I also knew that my family was safe,” he said, highlighting the importance of family during such trying times.

Gibson described the destruction of his home and his neighbors’ homes as "tragic" and "really sad." He empathized with his neighbors, saying, “There are neighbors I have that I was actually looking at them… I feel worse for them than I did for myself.”

In a heartfelt interview with Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo, Gibson shared his feelings about losing his home of 15 years. “It was an odd mixture of sadness… kind of a weird realization and blessing… because I thought they’re just things,” he said. “I’m going to miss some stuff. There was valuable stuff… personal stuff, that just breaks my heart. I feel like I’m being stripped down and prepared for something else. That’s maybe very personal, but I feel like the Almighty’s preparing me to do something big.”

When asked if he felt like it was “a spiritual preparation for the resurrection movie you’re about to embark on,” Gibson responded enthusiastically, referencing The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. “Totally,” he said. “I think that’s kind of it. It’s like, hey, look, God gives, God takes, we come in with nothing. That’s the same way we go out. And here’s the deal: You’ll always be okay if you seek first the kingdom of God.”
