Shania Twain has been happily married for nine years now, but the road to finding love with her husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, wasn't exactly a smooth one. In fact, it's a tale so unusual that even she calls it "beautifully twisted." The legendary singer recently opened up about her emotional journey in an interview with AARP The Magazine, revealing how a series of heart-wrenching events ultimately led her to her happily ever after.
From Heartbreak to Healing: Shania's Story
Back in 2008, Shania's world came crashing down when her then-husband, Robert John "Mutt" Lange—her longtime collaborator and co-writer—ended their 14-year marriage. It wasn't just the divorce that devastated her; it was the betrayal that came with it. Mutt had been having an affair with none other than Shania's close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Adding another layer of complexity, Marie-Anne happened to be married to Frédéric Thiébaud, the man who would eventually become Shania's husband. Talk about a tangled web!
Shania admitted that during those dark days, she often questioned whether she could go on. "There were times when I didn’t really care if tomorrow came," she confessed. But instead of letting the pain consume her, she chose to fight back. "Survival is everything," she said. "I was in quicksand. I panicked, like anyone would, but I refused to surrender. I found a way out." And out of that darkness, a new chapter of her life began—one filled with love and joy.

Life Beyond Music: Motherhood and Mentorship
Today, Shania is not only thriving in her marriage but also cherishing her role as a mom to her 18-year-old son, Eja, whom she shares with Robert. Interestingly, Eja is following in his parents' footsteps—but not exactly in the way you might expect. While Shania is known for her electrifying performances on stage, her son seems more inclined toward the creative side of music. "He’s very passionate about making music, creating music, composing music," Shania shared with Entertainment Tonight. "He doesn’t have this desire to be on stage. I’m not sure if he would ever go in that direction. He’s following more in the footsteps of creating the music. He loves to orchestrate music. I’m very happy for him."
For Shania, watching her son grow into his own artistic identity is a source of immense pride. In another interview with Sounds Like Nashville, she admitted, "He’s not taking interest in being a performer, so I’m relieved about that if I was being really honest. I think he’ll enjoy music more just being the creator of the music. It’s just really taxing being a performer, being the person out in front, unless that’s what he really wants. He just has a quiet confidence about him."
"He doesn’t have that extrovert—you know, everybody look at me—type of personality," she added. "I think it will suit him well to be the creator."
