Even the most successful musicians in the world can’t escape the universal experience of embarrassing their kids. Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, recently shared a delightful story about visiting his daughter Apple at her workplace. It’s a relatable moment for any parent who’s ever tried to show up unannounced in their child’s life, only to be met with a mix of pride and teenage panic.
Chris Martin Visits His Daughter Apple at Work
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 15, 2020, the 42-year-old musician opened up about stopping by his 16-year-old daughter’s job at a clothing store. “Apple’s working at a store—it’s her first job, and I couldn’t be prouder,” Chris said with a smile. “She’s figuring out her way in the world, which is such a beautiful thing to watch as a parent.” But as any dad knows, showing up unexpectedly can lead to some awkward moments.

The Awkward Encounter at the Checkout Line
Chris recounted how he decided to surprise his daughter during her shift. “I just thought, ‘I should stop by and see her.’ But then I thought, ‘Wait, I should probably buy something so it doesn’t seem weird.’” So, he picked up a T-shirt from the rack and joined the checkout line. “There were two registers, and she saw me coming. Her eyes widened, and she mouthed, ‘Dad, get out!’” Chris laughed as he told the story. “I felt terrible, so I quickly switched to the other line, clutching the T-shirt like a scared dad caught in the act.”
But the story didn’t end there. “I paid for the T-shirt, but I had brought her some fudge because she loves candy,” Chris continued. “So, I handed the fudge to the cashier and asked her to give it to Apple. As I was leaving, she shouted, ‘I love you, Dad!’” It was a sweet moment that reminded everyone in the audience just how much love exists between parents and their kids, even when things get a little awkward.

Family Ties: Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Partnership in Parenthood
Chris shares his two children, Apple and Moses, now 13, with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Although the couple married in 2003 and parted ways in 2016, they’ve maintained a close and respectful relationship. “Chris is more than just an ex-husband; he’s a dear friend,” Gwyneth revealed in an interview with ES Magazine. “We talk every day, and despite the challenges, we’ve managed to put our children first. It’s something we’re both incredibly proud of.”
Gwyneth also spoke candidly about motherhood and the sacrifices it entails. “Being a mom is one of the most profound experiences a person can have,” she said in a conversation with U.K.’s OK! Magazine. “It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. We often prioritize our children over ourselves, and while that can feel like a sacrifice, it’s part of what makes motherhood so meaningful.”
It’s clear that despite the challenges of raising two kids as co-parents, Chris and Gwyneth have built a loving, supportive environment for their family. And that’s what truly matters at the end of the day.
We’re all rooting for this family and the love they continue to share, even as their kids grow into their own unique personalities. After all, isn’t that what family is all about?
