You might not have guessed it back in 1970 when Susan Sarandon made her big-screen debut as a strung-out hippie in Joe, but she's become one of Hollywood's most iconic and enduring stars. And let me tell you, Susan herself probably wasn’t expecting it. "My life has been a series of happy accidents," she told AARP magazine. "The best thing I’ve learned is how to adapt when things don’t go as planned."
At 20 years old, Susan was a college student at Catholic University in D.C., where she met her future husband, Chris Sarandon, who was studying drama. "I never had formal acting lessons," Susan admits. "I kind of stumbled into it." The couple moved to New York City, and Susan, now 73, found herself working steadily in films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show throughout the '70s. By 1979, Susan and Chris went their separate ways. "He wasn’t a bad person," she explains. "It was about making a choice for myself and my future."
Fast forward to her relationship with director Louis Malle, who was 14 years her senior, and a much younger filmmaker, Franco Amurri. Susan ended up unexpectedly pregnant by Amurri, despite being told she wouldn’t be able to have children due to endometriosis. Her daughter Eva was soon joined by sons Jack and Miles from her 21-year relationship with Bull Durham co-star Tim Robbins. Motherhood became a defining chapter in Susan’s life.

“I was older than most first-time moms—39 when I had my first child and 45 when I had my third,” Susan shared with The Guardian. “Being with my kids during that time was the most rewarding and interesting experience of my life.”
