Ever wondered what it feels like to take a step back and let your partner shine? Well, Chip Gaines knows that feeling all too well. While he always imagined himself as the big star, life had other plans when he met his wife, Joanna Gaines. Their journey together, both personally and professionally, has been nothing short of extraordinary.
A Star Is Born: Chip's Journey Through Life
Back in grade school, Chip was the guy everyone wanted to be around. He was the popular kid, the athlete, and the comedian. "Throughout school, I was the life of the party," Chip, now 45, reminisced in an essay for the Spring issue of Magnolia Journal, the couple's lifestyle magazine. "I was a chameleon, always ready to impress anyone I met." But everything changed when HGTV came knocking and asked them to star in Fixer Upper.
The Turning Point: Realizing Joanna Was the Star
As Chip prepared for fame, he realized something unexpected during the second season of the show. It wasn't him who was stealing the spotlight—it was Joanna. "I thought I was going to be the superstar I'd always dreamed of," Chip recalled. But as the seasons went on, he noticed a shift in the dynamics of their meetings with network executives. "When Jo spoke, the room changed. People leaned in, intrigued by her vision and charm," he said. "It became clear that this world we'd entered was built for Joanna to lead, not me."

Accepting the Supporting Role
Chip admitted that he initially expected a standing ovation during meetings. "I thought people would be amazed by my ideas, but instead, they were confused," he laughed. "The reality was that Joanna had this quiet charisma that captivated everyone. She's a visionary, and her presence is magnetic." Chip went on to say, "I realized that my role wasn't to be the star but to support the star. And you know what? I couldn't be happier with that."

Building a Legacy Together
Chip concluded his essay by expressing gratitude for his role as Joanna's supporter. "The role I thought I was born to play wasn't the one meant for me," he said. "Instead, I've embraced my supporting role, and it's been the greatest joy of my life." Today, Chip and Joanna are parents to five wonderful kids—Drake, Ella Rose, Duke, Emmie Kay, and Crew—and they're continuing to build their empire with their own TV network launching this summer and a boutique hotel opening next year.
These two are truly living their dream, and their story is a testament to the power of partnership and love. Isn't that just amazing?
