Picture this: Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines, the power couple who seem to have it all. But rewind a few years, and you’ll uncover a story of grit, determination, and sheer willpower that built the Magnolia empire from the ground up. The former HGTV stars recently opened up about the challenges they faced and why they refused to throw in the towel during those tough times.
Why Quitting Was Never an Option for the Gaines Family
Joanna Gaines, now 42, shared her heart during the Salesforce Presents Stories of Resilience: A Conversation With Chip and Joanna Gaines on Finding Inspiration event on July 1. She revealed how her husband's unyielding spirit kept them going even when the odds were stacked against them. “Chip and his family have always had this mantra—Gaines never quit,” Joanna said. “He’d tell me, ‘Jo, we’re not going to quit; we’re going to make it through this.’”

The Dark Days That Almost Broke Them
Joanna, a writer for Magnolia Journal, admitted there were moments when she and Chip questioned their ability to keep going. “There were times when we looked at each other and thought, ‘How are we going to get through this?’” Joanna recalled. “We didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It felt like an endless struggle, and honestly, the thought of walking away seemed so much easier than figuring out how to survive it.”
Strength in Partnership
Chip and Joanna, married since 2003 and proud parents of five children—Drake, Ella, Duke, Emmie, and Crew—found strength in their partnership. Joanna explained that they leaned on each other during moments of weakness. “I’d often focus on the negatives, while Chip had this incredible ability to see the positives,” she said. “His optimism was contagious, and it gave me the courage to say, ‘Okay, I can do this.’”
Staying True to Plan A
Joanna, author of We Are the Gardeners, credited Chip for instilling the importance of sticking to their original plan. “We’ve always told people that once you decide not to quit, the momentum shifts,” she emphasized. “When you eliminate the idea of a plan B, you create this powerful determination that propels you forward.”
Chip’s Lessons in Resilience
Chip, now 45, shared how his upbringing shaped his mindset. “There doesn’t need to be a plan B,” he explained. “It’s like the story of explorers who burned their boats to ensure there was no turning back. That’s something I learned firsthand.”

Success Wasn’t Overnight
Joanna emphasized that their success didn’t happen overnight. “Even after committing to the journey, it wasn’t a smooth ride,” she said. “It took us several more years of hardship before we saw any real success.” Today, the Magnolia brand includes Silos Baking Co., Magnolia Table, Magnolia Press coffee shop, a partnership with Target, and plans for their own TV network.
Grateful for the Journey
Despite the challenges, Joanna expressed gratitude for every step of the way. “There’s something powerful about believing you can get through anything,” she reflected. “Had we given up and changed course because it seemed easier, we might have missed out on everything we’ve achieved.”
