Thankfully, Scout Willis, the 28-year-old daughter of Bruce and Demi, cleared up the mystery during an episode of the “Dopey” podcast on April 17.
Scout explained that Emma was initially planning to join them in Idaho. However, an unfortunate accident involving one of Bruce and Emma’s younger daughters, Mabel, 8, or Evelyn, 5, changed those plans. Scout recounted the story, sharing how one of her younger sisters found a hypodermic needle at the park and accidentally poked herself with it. Naturally, this required immediate medical attention, keeping Emma in Los Angeles.
Scout went on to explain that Bruce had traveled to Idaho early on, but as travel restrictions tightened due to the pandemic, Emma decided to stay behind in L.A. to care for their daughters. “My stepmom had to be in L.A. waiting to, like, get the results for taking her to the doctor,” Scout added.

Reuniting the Past with the Present
Considering it’s been over two decades since her parents split, Scout joked about the unique dynamic of having both her mom and dad back under the same roof. “It’s been really funny having both my parents at the house where they, like, raised us,” she said with a smile. “It’s kind of divine time to just hang out with them. … I’m very grateful to be with my family.”
Emma, who has been married to Bruce for 10 years, has nothing but love for her husband’s ex-wife. In fact, she left a sweet comment on one of Demi’s recent Instagram posts, saying she “[loves] and [misses] you guys.” Emma has always admired how Bruce and Demi prioritized their children during their divorce, and she’s learned a lot from observing their respectful relationship.
“I have so much respect for how Bruce and Demi worked through their divorce to be able to put their children first,” Emma told Closer Weekly in April 2019. “I learned so much from that and grew so much from watching that.”
