Remember Baby Tabitha? Erin Murphy Reflects on Growing Up at 60

Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we? Erin Murphy, the actress who captured our hearts as Tabitha Stephens on the classic sitcom Bewitched, is all grown up now. At the age of 60, Erin shared some heartfelt reflections on her life and career on X, sparking a wave of nostalgia among fans of the beloved show. On September 17, Erin celebrated not only her own birthday but also the 60th anniversary of Bewitched’s premiere.

“Want to feel old? Bewitched premiered 60 years ago today, September 17, 1964. AND little Tabitha (Me!) is 60 years old!” Erin wrote in a post, adding a heart emoji for good measure. Alongside her message, she included a charming photo of herself as a child, reminding fans of the magical world of witches, warlocks, and wands that Bewitched brought into our living rooms.

Fans couldn't help but chime in with their own memories of the show. One person commented, “I grew up watching this, one of my favorites, and so were you!” Another fan reminisced, “I remember it well. Bewitched was one of my favorite TV shows growing up. In Black & White of course. Who had color TV? We didn’t get it in my house until the mid 1970’s. Congratulations Tabitha! (Erin) Great memories.”

Even today, the magic of Bewitched continues to enchant audiences. The show, which aired from September 17, 1964, to March 25, 1972, featured an all-star cast including Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York, Agnes Moorehead, Dick Sargent, and David White. Fans are still tuning in to reruns, proving that the charm of Samantha Stephens and her family hasn’t faded with time.

“I loved the show and looked forward to watching every episode,” one fan wrote under Erin’s post. Another added, “We’re only as old as we feel.” The sentiment was echoed by yet another commenter who said, “Awwww. And you were the best part of an excellent show!”

Erin hasn’t shied away from sharing glimpses of her current life on her X account. She’s posted several updated photos, showing that she’s just as beautiful now as she was back in the days of Tabitha's magical antics.

Growing Up with Tabitha: Behind the Scenes

Erin has been candid about her experiences on Bewitched. Interestingly, she revealed that when she was younger, she didn’t watch the show herself. Her twin sister, Diane Murphy, also played the role of Tabitha, sharing the spotlight with her.

“There was no sibling rivalry,” Diane shared with People in November 1999. “We had a lot of structure at home.”

Erin also fondly remembers working alongside Elizabeth Montgomery, who portrayed the enchanting Samantha Stephens. “When I was bad, she would call me ‘Erin Margaret!’ just like my mom did,” Erin recalled. “I knew that Dick York was very sick. He’d lean against this special board between scenes because he had a very bad back.”

  • Tragically, Dick York, who played Darrin Stephens, passed away from emphysema in 1992 at the age of 63. Dick Sargent took over the role due to York’s health struggles. Erin explained the transition, “It wasn’t a big deal because I knew that Dick York had not been doing well and not feeling well over the last year that he was on the show. I was aware that he was in pain and the situation was explained to me. We had different actors playing different family members all the time, so it wasn’t that big a transition. They were both great but very different people.”

    A Career Beyond Tabitha

After her time on Bewitched, Erin made a guest appearance on Lassie in 1973. She then took a break from acting, reemerging in 2010. Her most recent role was in a 2019 episode of TV Therapy. Despite the years that have passed, Erin’s memories of the Bewitched set remain vivid.

“I have memories, obviously, from what I see on camera. But I also remember things about, ‘Oh yeah, that’s the day when … ,’ and I remember something we had for lunch that day, or I remember, like, the things that happened behind the scenes,” Erin said. “So it’s great to have the shows to watch, but I remember a lot of it. I remember the scenes and the animals that were there — we had chimpanzees and elephants — and all the people. Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York were wonderful people and I learned a lot from all of them. And they loved kids.”
