Let’s talk about an incredible birthday gift! The new movie version of West Side Story, directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, is set to premiere in theaters on December 10. And guess what? The very next day, the iconic Rita Moreno will be celebrating her 90th birthday. "I can't believe it," she says with excitement. "I’m about to turn 90, and this new adaptation of West Side Story is like the cherry on top of my cake!"

Rita Moreno’s journey in Hollywood is nothing short of extraordinary. She’s been in the industry for over seven decades, and she’s not just any performer—she's a trailblazer. Born as a little Puerto Rican girl who faced countless challenges, she encountered racism and sexism throughout her career. Yet, she didn’t let that stop her. Today, she’s one of only 16 people who have achieved the coveted EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.

A Life Documented: A New PBS Special

On October 10, PBS will premiere a documentary titled Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It. This film is a deep dive into the life of a woman who has inspired generations. Rita shares her thoughts on her longevity in the industry: "I think one of the reasons I’m still here is because I’ve always kept myself busy. Whether it's concerts, television, lectures, or theater, I’ve done it all. I like to think I can take on any challenge that comes my way."

    Early Challenges and Triumphs

When Rita first stepped into the world of performing arts as an immigrant child from Puerto Rico, things weren’t easy. By the age of 16, she was already supporting her family. Her talent was undeniable, and she quickly became an MGM contract player. She appeared in blockbuster films like Singin’ in the Rain and The King and I. Despite her immense talent, she often faced prejudice. "Gene Kelly was one of the few who didn’t judge me because of my ethnicity," she recalls fondly. "But in many films, I was treated like a sex object. I remember they used to put very dark makeup on me, and I resented that deeply."

    Healing and Activism

Rita found solace and strength in therapy, which helped her process the challenges she faced. She also became an activist, advocating for immigrants to embrace their heritage. "Wear your nationality like a flag, be proud of it!" she urges. At 89, she continues to be a voice for change. "It took years for me to realize my own worth," she admits. "But now, as a grandmother of two, with a career that shows no signs of slowing down, I know my value. And I’m proud of it."
