Loretta Devine: A Lifelong Journey In The Spotlight

Loretta Devine, an iconic figure in the entertainment world, began her journey to stardom back in 1981 with the smash Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Since then, she’s maintained a steady presence in both films and television, proving her undeniable talent and charm. It’s almost as if she was destined for the stage and screen from the very beginning.

“You know, I think my mom had big dreams for me—Loretta Young was my namesake,” shares the Houston native with Closer. “As a kid, I devoured books, and my mom would bring home poetry and Shakespeare. I think all that exposure really sparked my passion for the arts. It was like planting a seed that grew into this lifelong journey.”

At 71 years young, Loretta is shining brightly in Queen Bees, a delightful romantic comedy that features a stellar cast including Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, and Jane Curtin. In this film, Loretta plays Sally, one of three women who form the heart of a retirement community’s social scene, where Ellen’s character temporarily relocates.

“Working on Queen Bees was an absolute blast. Collaborating with such legendary talent was both thrilling and challenging,” Loretta reflects. “What made it so special was Sally’s depth as a character—she had layers, complexities, and a rich backstory that made her truly fascinating. It was a role I couldn’t pass up.”

On Aging Gracefully in Hollywood

Do you think Hollywood is finally realizing there’s a market for films about older adults?

“To be honest, I’m not sure what Hollywood’s up to these days! Sure, it’s still a youth-driven industry, but lately, I’ve noticed more projects featuring older characters. Maybe the tide is turning, or maybe it’s just a happy coincidence,” Loretta muses with a laugh.

Reflecting on Her Breakthrough Role

What do you consider your big break?

“Oh, that would definitely be my role in Waiting to Exhale. It was the moment everything changed for me. My first film, Little Nikita, with the legendary Sidney Poitier, was a thrilling experience. But who knew what would come next? That’s the unpredictable nature of this business. You just keep moving forward, chasing opportunities, and hoping for the best,” she explains.

Working with Sidney Poitier: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

What was it like working with Sidney Poitier?

“Playing his love interest in Little Nikita was a dream come true. It was my first major movie, and we even had a bedroom scene together. They wanted me to go all out, but I wasn’t ready for that! Still, working with someone I admired so much was unforgettable. Sidney was incredibly kind and supportive,” Loretta recalls fondly.

Celebrating Her Favorite Costars

Who are some of your favorite people to work with?

“Honestly, I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with almost everyone in the business. The women from Waiting to Exhale—we’re still close to this day. And then there’s Tasha Smith from Jumping the Broom, who played a pivotal role in getting me onto P-Valley. It’s amazing how different people have shaped my career in their own unique ways,” she shares.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Looking back, is there anything you wish you knew when you were starting out?

“I’ve learned so much over the years. For one, I’ve realized that work begets work. And speaking up is crucial—you don’t have to stay silent out of fear. When I was younger, I hesitated to voice my opinions, but now? I say exactly what’s on my mind. If they don’t like it, that’s their problem,” she says with a laugh.

Retirement? Not on Loretta’s Radar

Do you ever think about retiring?

“Not even for a second! Look at icons like Betty White and Cicely Tyson—they showed us that age is just a number. As long as I have stories to tell and characters to bring to life, I’ll keep going,” she declares.

Seeking New Challenges

What do you look for in a role?

“There’s so much repetition in this industry, but I thrive on trying new things. Recently, I played a blind stripper in her 80s on P-Valley. Can you imagine? It was such a departure from anything I’ve done before. I also loved my role on Being Mary Jane, where I played a man. Talk about stepping out of your comfort zone!”

That sounds like quite the adventure!

“Absolutely! You never know what twists and turns a show will take. Right now, I’m having a blast on Family Reunion, a kids’ comedy on Netflix. Working with the younger generation brings so much joy and energy to my life,” she enthuses.

Life Beyond Acting

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

“I’m a total craft enthusiast! I knit, crochet, sew, design gowns, create jewelry, write songs, and even paint. During filming, I often use my downtime to work on these projects while memorizing my lines. It’s all about finding joy in the little things,” she says.

“Thanks! These hobbies keep me grounded and fulfilled. They’re purely for my own enjoyment—I don’t sell or give them away. It’s all about the process and the passion.”

How do you maintain your health and well-being?

“To be honest, I could be more health-conscious. Right now, my focus is on having fun and cherishing every moment. Life is unpredictable, as I was reminded recently when a friend lost his wife unexpectedly. It’s a wake-up call to live each day to the fullest and prepare for whatever may come.”

What role does spirituality play in your life?

“Spirituality has been a constant in my life since childhood. I’ve always believed that God is my ultimate manager, guiding me toward the right opportunities. My career has been shaped by roles that reflect honesty, integrity, and truth. I have unwavering faith that God loves me and will provide for me if I ask with sincerity.”

What else would you like to accomplish?

“Oh, there’s still so much I want to do! I just hope to remain an active part of this industry. In Hollywood, the older generation’s opportunities often depend on the younger creators who write and produce. As long as there’s a story to tell, I’ll be here to tell it.”
