Back in 2011, an emotional Melissa Leo stepped onto the Oscars stage to accept the award for Best Supporting Actress. Her excitement was palpable as she exclaimed, “I’m just shaking in my boots here.” She went on to express her admiration for past winners, noting how they made accepting the award seem so effortless. In her own unique way, Melissa captured the moment with her genuine reaction, leaving a lasting impression on everyone watching.
Melissa Leo, now 61, has been captivating audiences for nearly four decades. Her career has been nothing short of extraordinary, bringing to life a wide array of characters in both film and television. In a heartfelt interview with Closer, Melissa shared her love for the diverse roles she's played over the years. “I adore the women I’ve portrayed—whether they’re lovable, hateful, mean, delightful, ugly, or pretty,” she said. “Each one of them has enriched my life, making me a better, stronger, and more capable person.”
A New Chapter: Melissa as Ida Red
Melissa’s latest venture takes her into the world of Ida Red, a film now playing in theaters. In this movie, Melissa plays the title character, a powerful figure leading a Midwestern crime syndicate. Ida Red is a woman who commands respect, a quality Melissa found particularly appealing about the role. “She’s revered by everyone, even the white males in the story,” Melissa explained. “In my later years, I’ve noticed I don’t always receive the same level of respect, so playing Ida was a delightful reminder of what that feels like.”

The Oscar Win: A Mixed Blessing
Many actors dream of winning an Oscar, believing it will catapult their careers to new heights. For Melissa, who took home the award for her role in The Fighter in 2010, the reality was a bit different. “After winning the Academy Award, I thought, ‘This is amazing! The roles will just come pouring in, all these leading parts!’ But then I realized, ‘Wait, where’s the work?’” Melissa recalled. She had to adjust her expectations and embrace the unpredictability of the industry.
Prioritizing Quality Over Size
Today, Melissa places more emphasis on the quality of the projects she chooses rather than the size of her role. This approach has allowed her to maintain a steady stream of work. Alongside Ida Red, Melissa has three more films set for release in 2022 and several others in various stages of production. “I’m not like John Wayne, showing up to do the same kind of work repeatedly,” Melissa explained. “I’m always striving to reinvent myself and discover characters I haven’t played before. As I enter the final chapter of my career, I want to tell stories about women that are authentic and showcase women in all their complexity, painting a broader and more inclusive picture.”
