There’s something magical about actors who bring their characters to life with authenticity and charm. For Gerald McRaney, playing retired Admiral Hollace Kilbride on NCIS: Los Angeles feels like returning to the playground of his dreams. “This role has reignited that spark of excitement I haven’t felt since my days on Simon & Simon,” he shares with Closer. Though he first stepped into the shoes of Admiral Kilbride back in Season 6, it wasn’t until this season, when his character took the helm of the Office of Special Projects, that he became a series regular. “Every day on set feels like an adventure. Sometimes, I even arrive early because I can’t wait to get started,” he confesses with enthusiasm.
For Gerald, now 74, these are golden days filled with joy and fulfillment. He shares his life with his beloved wife of 33 years, actress Delta Burke, who’s also 65. Their partnership extends beyond personal love; they’ve worked together on numerous projects. “Delta and I thrive in each other’s company. Unlike many couples, we actually do better when we’re together 24/7. It’s a beautiful dynamic,” he reflects warmly.

Gerald’s journey to acting wasn’t a straight line. “As a kid, I wanted to be either a scientist or a doctor. But let’s be honest, I didn’t have the math skills to pull that off. Around the age of 14, fate nudged me toward acting. A knee injury during a football game sidelined me, and someone suggested I help the drama club build sets. That’s where my passion for acting was born. A teacher cast me in a play, and I realized, ‘Hey, I can do this!’ Ever since, I’ve been chasing that dream,” he recalls with a chuckle.
Family Support: Encouragement Amidst Doubts
How did your family react to your decision to pursue acting?
“At first, they were cautiously discouraging. They knew how tough the entertainment industry could be. But once they saw how determined I was, they fully embraced my choice. Their support meant everything to me,” he says, emphasizing the importance of family backing in his career.
The Breakthrough Role: A Career Turning Point
What role do you consider your big break?
“My career has been a steady climb, but Simon & Simon was a game-changer. It opened so many doors for me. However, if I could make money doing repertory theater, I’d still be there. There’s nothing like playing different roles night after night. One evening, you’re the king, and the next, you’re carrying a spear. I’ll always see myself as a character actor at heart,” he explains with genuine affection.
Favorite Roles: A Journey Through Time

“Playing Major Dad was special because of my connection to the Marine Corps. Those guys were incredible to work with. Another standout was Deadwood, where I portrayed George Hearst. Then there’s Dr. K on This Is Us, and now Admiral Kilbride on NCIS: Los Angeles. Each role has brought its own unique joy and challenges,” he reminisces fondly.
Admiral Kilbride: A Role With Depth
What draws you to playing Admiral Kilbride?
“The admiral is a cynic when it comes to Los Angeles, and I love that about him. He’s not shy about poking fun at all the superficial aspects of California culture, like those fancy coffee drinks. He’s not afraid to say, ‘Come on, folks, just grab a cup of coffee already!’ While the character deals with serious matters, there’s a comedic undertone that I truly enjoy exploring,” Gerald reveals.
It sounds like you’re having the time of your life on NCIS: Los Angeles.
“Absolutely! The crew is top-notch, the cast is amazing, the writing is sharp, and everyone brings their A-game. It’s such a pleasure to work with such professional people. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to take the work seriously but never yourself. And let me tell you, there’s not a single diva in this bunch. We all get along beautifully,” he praises the team wholeheartedly.
Co-Stars: Lifelong Bonds
Who are some of your favorite co-stars over the years?
“Jameson Parker was an incredible partner during our eight years on Simon & Simon. We’re still close friends and even go hunting together. Our friendship began during my audition and has only grown stronger over the years.”
Delta Burke joined you on Designing Women. Would you enjoy working with her again?
“Working with Delta is always a delight, although she’s mostly stepped away from show business. We’ve collaborated on a few projects recently, but I suspect she’s ready to move on. That said, the right project might tempt her one more time. If it happens, I’d walk a mile in uncomfortable shoes just to work with her again. She’s truly remarkable,” he says with admiration.

What’s the secret to a happy marriage?
“Marrying Delta Burke was the key for me! I’ve been married twice before, so clearly, I wasn’t doing something right. But Delta is the one who changed everything. She’s simply extraordinary,” he gushes.
Where’s home for you and Delta now?
“We’ve purchased a home in Central Florida, where Delta grew up. We plan to move there this spring and enjoy the rest of our lives together. We’ll spend our days fishing, collecting shells, and relaxing by the beach. It’s all about creating lasting memories,” he shares with a smile.
Retirement Plans and Legacy
Are you thinking about retirement anytime soon?
“Not really. I don’t think I’ll ever fully retire. Maybe semi-retire, but as long as I can remember my lines and show up on time, I’ll keep going. Acting is my passion, and I can’t imagine stepping away completely,” he admits.
Did any of your three children follow in your footsteps?
“Thankfully, none of them pursued acting. They all had good sense, which is a relief,” he jokes.
Do you have grandchildren?
“Yes, I have six grandchildren. I recently attended my oldest granddaughter’s wedding. It was a beautiful day,” he says with pride.
