Let me tell you about one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories. Martin Sheen, the legendary actor who has captivated audiences for decades, met the love of his life early in his career. His wife, Janet Sheen, has been by his side through thick and thin since they tied the knot back in 1961. Their journey together is nothing short of inspiring, and it's time we gave Janet the spotlight she deserves. Keep reading to learn more about this incredible woman who's been Martin's rock for over six decades.
Introducing Janet Sheen: The Woman Behind the Icon
Born as Janet Templeton, she first crossed paths with Martin—then known as Ramón Estévez—when she was an art student in New York City. At the time, Martin was starting to make waves in Hollywood with his powerful performances, including his breakout role in Badlands. It wasn’t long before they fell deeply in love, and Janet decided to take on her husband's stage name, becoming Janet Sheen. This decision marked the beginning of a partnership that would last a lifetime.

Janet isn’t just a supportive spouse; she’s also a talented artist in her own right. Over the years, she’s earned recognition for her work in front of and behind the camera. For instance, she portrayed Elaine de Kooning in the critically acclaimed Kennedy miniseries in 1983. Her skills didn’t stop there. In 1989, she produced Beverly Hills Brats, showcasing her versatility in the entertainment industry. But perhaps her most notable contribution came in 2010 when she served as the executive producer of The Way, a deeply personal film starring Martin. In a June 2022 interview with Closer, Martin opened up about why this project holds such a special place in his heart.

"The one that fills me with the deepest gratitude and satisfaction is called The Way," Martin shared. "We made it in Spain, focusing on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and dedicated it to my father, who was from Galicia. Written, directed, and starred in by my son Emilio Estévez, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Thousands of people have seen the film and been inspired to embark on the pilgrimage themselves. That sense of connection and inspiration is a tremendous source of pride for me."
Janet was also there for Martin during one of the scariest moments of his life. During the filming of Apocalypse Now in the Philippines, Martin suffered a heart attack. At just 37 years old, he found himself in a remote jungle location, far from medical help. Thankfully, Janet was by his side, offering strength and comfort.
"There was a struggle to get me to a hospital because we were in a remote area of the jungle," Martin recounted in a November 2016 interview with Closer. "My wife, Janet, was running down the corridor as I was being wheeled on a gurney. She leaned down and whispered, 'It’s only a movie, babe. Please, it’s only a movie!' Her calm presence helped me stay focused and hopeful during that terrifying time."
This wasn’t the only medical challenge Janet helped Martin overcome. In December 2015, he underwent quadruple-bypass heart surgery. Once again, Janet proved to be a pillar of strength, helping him recover with humor and grace.
"She was there the whole time, and I laughed my way back," Martin recalled. "It was a serious situation, but she handled it like a true professional. She reminded me not to take myself too seriously, even in the most dire circumstances. Her ability to make me laugh and keep things light is something I’ll always cherish."
Exploring the Lives of Martin and Janet’s Children
Their family life is just as rich and inspiring as their professional achievements. In 1962, Martin and Janet welcomed their first child, son Emilio Estévez, who followed in their footsteps as a successful actor, director, and writer. Unlike his siblings, Emilio chose to keep his original last name, honoring his roots while carving out his own path in Hollywood.

Their second son, Ramón Sheen, was born in 1963. Following in his parents’ footsteps, Ramón pursued a career in acting and directing. He later founded Estévez Sheen Productions with his father, continuing their shared passion for storytelling.
The couple’s third son, Charlie Sheen, came into the world in 1965. Known for his role in Two and a Half Men, Charlie has worked alongside Martin in several projects, including Wall Street, Spin City, and Anger Management. Their collaboration highlights the strong bond between father and son.
Finally, in 1967, Janet and Martin welcomed their only daughter, Renée Estevez. Renée carved out her own impressive career in the entertainment industry, starring in beloved films like Heathers and TV series like JAG and The West Wing. Her success underscores the incredible talent that runs in this remarkable family.
