Let’s talk about Robin Roberts, the beloved host of Good Morning America, and her incredible journey with her wife, Amber Laign. In a recent segment on her show, Robin opened up about their unique living arrangement, shedding light on their relationship and how it continues to thrive despite some unconventional choices.
A Unique Love Story: Living Apart by Choice
Robin, now 64 years old, shared during a heartfelt Good Morning America segment on January 22 that she and Amber, 50, live separately—not out of necessity but because of their demanding work schedules. “It’s not for everyone,” Robin explained. “Amber and I live apart, but it’s not by choice. It’s because of the way our work schedules align. But trust me, there’s a lot of trust in this relationship. And honestly, there are people from my past that I wouldn’t have done this with.”
City Life vs. Country Charm: Their Diverse Homes
Robin resides in a stunning $2.5 million apartment in Manhattan, which offers her easy access to the Good Morning America studios. Meanwhile, Amber owns a lovely home in the Upper West Side of New York City, just a short 10-minute drive away from Robin. But that’s not all—Robin also owns a breathtaking 0.92-acre mansion in Farmington, Connecticut, where the couple legally tied the knot in 2023 after an incredible 18 years of dating.

Robin often spends her weekdays in her city apartment, but she revealed that their relationship deepened during the pandemic. When the world shut down in 2020, Robin and Amber retreated to their Connecticut home, spending more time together than ever before. “We spent more time together this year than in the previous 15 years combined,” Robin told People in April 2021. “We’ve never been stronger! I remember packing up part of my dressing room here in New York City and heading home to Connecticut. I’m so glad I packed a lot of patience.”
From Secret Romance to Public Love
Robin and Amber’s love story began in 2005 on a blind date. For years, they kept their romance private, but in 2013, Robin made headlines when she came out as a lesbian in a heartfelt Facebook post. Since then, the couple has embraced their relationship openly, inspiring countless fans with their unwavering commitment to each other.

Throughout their relationship, Robin and Amber have supported each other through numerous health challenges. In February 2022, Robin shared an emotional Instagram video revealing that Amber had been diagnosed with breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor herself, Robin vowed to stand by her partner’s side throughout her treatment. “She and I have been together almost 17 years, helping each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer,” Robin said at the time. “Now, it’s my turn to be there for her the way she was for me.”
A New Chapter: Love and Marriage
Amber completed her radiation treatment in July 2022, and shortly after, Robin announced their plans to tie the knot in a romantic ceremony surrounded by family and friends. “We’re getting married this year,” Robin gushed in January 2023. “It’s something we had talked about, but we put it off because of her illness. But now, it’s about saying yes to that next chapter.”
Robin also shared the story of their unconventional engagement, which perfectly reflects their down-to-earth personalities. “Looking back, it was pretty fitting for us not to have a traditional down-on-one-knee proposal,” she said. “Instead, it happened at our favorite hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot, where we put calamari rings on each other and said, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.’”
