Home Town fans can’t get enough of watching Erin and Ben Napier transform lives with their jaw-dropping renovations. In February 2020, the couple took on one of their most memorable projects yet—helping client John Combe turn his dream home into reality in an episode aptly titled “The Sky’s the Limit.” Just a few months later, Erin delivered heartbreaking news to her followers about her dear friend. Keep reading to learn more about what happened to John after the show aired.
The Unforgettable Episode That Changed Everything
In this landmark episode, Erin and Ben faced their biggest challenge yet: renovating The Walters House, a historic property that had been home to its previous owners for over three decades. With an unlimited budget courtesy of John, the Napiers were free to unleash their creativity and bring this mid-century gem back to life. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home was originally listed at $199,000, but John wasn’t concerned about costs—he wanted the absolute best for his new sanctuary.
John, a seasoned traveler who had spent the last decade living in Belize, was ready for a change of pace. After years of exploring the world, he was drawn to the charm and tranquility of Laurel, Mississippi. “I’m tired of big cities,” he explained during the episode. “I fell in love with the town of Laurel. It’s the perfect place for me to relax and enjoy life. Money isn’t an issue for me—the sky’s the limit.”

Erin and Ben poured their hearts into this project, adding personalized touches that would make the space truly unique. Erin collaborated with her drawing students to create custom artwork for the walls, while Ben crafted a stunning pool cue rack using the original staircase banister. As they put the finishing touches on the house, Erin couldn’t help but reflect on the impact their work would have. “I hope John walks in tomorrow and is completely blown away,” she said, her excitement palpable.
When John finally saw the completed home, his reaction was pure joy. He described it as “gorgeous” and “fantastic,” marveling at the Spanish Colonial style that perfectly matched his vision. “I feel like I’m in heaven,” he exclaimed as he stepped into the breathtaking backyard. To top it all off, Erin presented him with a special gift—a drawing of his new home, labeled “The Combe House.” It was a moment that will forever be cherished by fans of the show.
A Heartbreaking Farewell
Tragically, just two months after the episode aired, Erin shared devastating news with her followers. In an emotional Instagram post, she revealed that John had passed away at the age of 70. “Though we only knew him for a brief time, we are heartbroken to share that our dear friend Mr. John Combe from one of our favorite episodes ever has left us,” she wrote. “John lived life to the fullest, squeezing every drop out of every moment. We were honored to help create such a special place for his final chapter on earth. His kindness and generosity will be deeply missed.”
Before his passing, Erin shared more about John’s incredible journey on the Laurel Mercantile Co. blog. Born into a military family, John spent much of his childhood moving around due to his father’s 30-year career in the U.S. Air Force. “My life has been incredible,” he reflected. “I’ve always been lucky. My dad was an amazing man who taught me so much about life—the importance of truth, right, and wrong. Those lessons stayed with me through all my adventures.”
