In 1949, Dick, the older brother of actress Joyce Van Patten, landed the role of Nels Hansen in the series Mama, which aired on CBS. After his time on Mama, Dick continued to build his career with guest appearances on shows like The Partners, The Doris Day Show, and Arnie. But it wasn’t until he joined the cast of Eight Is Enough in 1977 that his career really took off. Alongside co-stars Grant Goodeve, Adam Rich, and Dianne Kay, Dick brought the Bradford family to life in a way that resonated with viewers across the country.
