Let’s rewind to the early '80s, when a young Sarah Michelle Gellar was just starting to carve out her place in Hollywood. The future star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was already making waves with her roles in films and off-Broadway plays. But it wasn’t until 1997, when she landed the iconic role of Buffy Summers, that her career—and personal life—took a major leap. At just 20 years old, this powerhouse actress did something most people her age only dream of: she bought her very first home. And trust me, it was no small feat.

Fast forward to today, and Sarah, now 46, reflects on that moment with pride. She used her hard-earned Hollywood paycheck to purchase a beautiful home, a move that symbolized her independence and success. What’s even more impressive? She did it all on her own. Talk about a boss move!

“When I first bought that home, it was all about the excitement,” Sarah told People in an interview on October 10. Her voice still carries the same enthusiasm as she described the feeling of having a place she could truly call her own. “Having a home that’s yours, a sanctuary where you can shut the door and leave the world behind—it’s such a powerful thing. It’s like having your own little piece of peace in a chaotic world.”

Of course, the journey wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. While Sarah cherished the sense of independence and serenity that came with owning her own home, she also faced the reality of what it means to be a homeowner. “It’s one thing to dream about buying a house, but another thing entirely to realize just how much responsibility comes with it,” she admitted. And let’s be real, at 20 years old, that responsibility can feel overwhelming.

At the time, Sarah was juggling her blossoming career with her newfound role as a homeowner. She was filming Scream 2, working alongside legends like Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell. Balancing a busy acting schedule with the demands of maintaining a home wasn’t easy. “I grew up in an apartment building where there was always someone to call if something broke. Suddenly, I was the one responsible for fixing everything. It was a whole new world,” she recalled.

And if that wasn’t enough, Sarah revealed that she was the first person in her family to ever own a home. “It was a big deal for me, and for my family. I didn’t have anyone to guide me through the process, so I had to figure it out on my own. But looking back, I’m so proud of what I accomplished,” she said with a smile.

A New Chapter: Life in LA with Family

Fast forward to today, and Sarah’s life looks a little different. She now resides in a stunning Los Angeles mansion with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., and their two children, Charlotte and Rocky. Her home is a vibrant reflection of her personality, filled with colorful design accents and a library that would make any book lover drool.

“Collecting first-edition books became a passion of mine when I started earning real paychecks on Buffy. While some of my castmates bought new cars, I invested in books,” Sarah shared in a 2022 interview with Apartment Therapy. “It’s something that brings me so much joy and fulfillment.”

Her Favorite Room: A Colorful Library

Sarah’s library, with its meticulously color-coordinated bookshelves, has become one of her favorite rooms in the house. And it all started with a little help from a friend. “A mom of one of my kids’ friends couldn’t handle the chaos of my book collection anymore,” Sarah joked. “She showed up one day and completely transformed my library. It’s now a space I absolutely love.”
