It’s the end of an era, folks. HGTV’s Hilary Farr is saying goodbye to the show that made her a household name. After 19 incredible seasons of Love It or List It, the beloved designer announced her official departure from the series. It’s a big moment for fans and Hilary herself.
In a candid interview with People on Friday, December 1, Hilary opened up about her decision to leave the show that has been such a big part of her life. “I’ve poured so much of myself into this show for so many years,” she said. “It’s been my rock through tough times, and it’s been a comfort for audiences too. It’s become a staple in people’s lives, and it’s been so rewarding. But now, it’s time for me to step into the next chapter and embrace new challenges.”
A Journey with David Visentin
Back in 2008, Hilary embarked on her journey with Love It or List It alongside her cohost, David Visentin. Over the years, the two formed a strong friendship that goes beyond the cameras. Her departure from the show is bittersweet, especially given their bond.

“David didn’t believe me at first when I told him I wouldn’t be returning for season 20,” Hilary recalled with a laugh. “He said, ‘Oh, you say that.’ But the truth is, we’re just who we are on that show. Think of your brother at his most obnoxious and annoying—that’s David.”
Through Thick and Thin
Hilary went on to explain that David was there for her during some of the toughest moments of her life, including her battle with breast cancer. “I worked through my cancer treatment, and David was always there for me,” she reflected. “He had his own rough patches too, and we were there for each other. That friendship has been so meaningful, and I don’t think it’s going to change, even with me leaving the show.”

Moving On
Hilary’s decision to leave wasn’t easy, but she realized it was the right choice for her while filming season 19. “I came to understand that everything I am as a woman—someone who seeks challenges, inspiration, and new ideas—needed to grow and evolve,” she explained. “I told everyone, ‘I’m done.’”
But don’t worry, Hilary isn’t stepping away from the spotlight entirely. In late 2021, she launched her own series, Tough Love With Hilary Farr, which aired its second season in September 2023. So far, there’s no word on her leaving this project. “We’ll see what happens with season three,” Hilary teased. “But I’m definitely not stepping away from my career.”
