Hey there, let's talk about something real. Mina Starsiak Hawk, the vibrant and candid host of HGTV’s Good Bones, is speaking out about her health journey. She's convinced that she's dealing with breast implant illness (BII), after experiencing some pretty puzzling symptoms. Mina shared her concerns with her fans on her podcast, "Mina AF," where she dives deep into her personal challenges since getting implants.
Now, listen up—this is not your typical celebrity gossip. Mina got super vulnerable, saying, “I started digging into research, and I’m telling you, I’m absolutely convinced that I have breast implant illness. I’m not joking around here.” She went on to explain how the symptoms she’s been experiencing—like swelling in her hands, random inflammation in different parts of her body—are lining up with what she's learned about BII. “The symptoms are so vague, it’s almost like a mystery illness,” she admitted during the October 3 podcast episode.
Unpacking Breast Implant Illness
In this episode, Mina didn’t go at it alone. She brought in her husband, Steve Hawk, and a special guest, Dr. Peter Koltz, to break down the myths and realities of breast implant illness. The truth is, the exact cause of BII isn’t fully understood yet, but experts like Dr. Koltz suggest it could be tied to autoimmune or inflammatory reactions in the body.

Dr. Koltz elaborated, “What we’re seeing is a pattern of symptoms that people often link to breast implant illness. These can include memory loss, overwhelming fatigue, hair loss, unexplained weight gain, and generalized swelling throughout the body.”
The good doctor also discussed various treatment options and reviewed past studies on BII, aiming to empower women who might be dealing with similar issues. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so it’s crucial to arm yourself with facts,” he emphasized.
Mina's Emotional Reaction
Mina shared how this revelation hit her on a personal level. “I was listening to a podcast, doing some research, and it triggered two strong reactions in me,” she confessed. “First, there was this immediate fear-based response. Then, I thought, ‘Oh, well, this is an easy fix—just take the implants out, no big deal.’”
But as she dug deeper, Mina realized it wasn’t quite that simple. “You know, human nature often leads us to look for the quickest fix, whether it’s changing our diet, taking supplements, or other adjustments,” she explained. “What really hit me hard was when the doctor mentioned that breast implant illness might be linked to fertility issues. That’s such a deeply personal struggle for so many women.”

Looking Back at Her Mommy Makeover
Let’s rewind a bit. Back in December 2020, Mina underwent a mommy makeover after welcoming her second child, Charlotte. The surgery included a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast implants. At the time, Mina was all about feeling confident and refreshed.
Reflecting on her decision in a January 2021 interview with People, Mina said, “Let me tell you, surgery is no walk in the park. Recovery is tough, and stepping away from work isn’t easy either. But I’m so fortunate to have been in a position where I could make choices that felt right for me. It helped me feel strong, attractive, and most importantly, like myself again.”
