At 97 years young, Dick charmed the crowd by waving enthusiastically from a balcony in Disney’s New Orleans Square. Arlene, who happens to be 52, stood proudly by his side, greeting the fans who gathered below to celebrate the Hollywood legend. Throughout the day, Dick was seen being wheeled around the park by a Disney cast member, ensuring he could enjoy every moment of this special outing.

This wasn’t Dick’s first time gracing that iconic balcony. Eight years ago, on his 90th birthday, Disney fans serenaded him with a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” from the same spot. As he approaches his 98th birthday on December 13, it’s clear that Dick’s connection to Disney runs deep—and the feeling is mutual.

One of Dick’s most memorable contributions to the Disney universe came in the form of the 1964 classic Mary Poppins, where he famously played not one, but two unforgettable characters: Mr. Dawes Sr. and Bert. In a candid interview with Closer in March 2023, Dick recounted how he had to convince Walt Disney himself to let him take on both roles. “I had to go to Walt and beg him to let me do it,” Dick recalled with a laugh. “So, he made me do a screen test. I got the part—and I didn’t even charge him extra! It was such fun.”

When asked about his experience collaborating with co-star Julie Andrews, Dick’s admiration for her talent and charm shines through. “I just lucked out with the leading ladies,” he admitted. “As I told Julie, ‘If I’m not enjoying myself, I stink. In 2018, Dick returned to the world of Mary Poppins in the sequel Mary Poppins Returns, wowing audiences with an age-defying dance number that left everyone in awe. Reflecting on the experience in a December 2018 interview with People, Dick said, “The minute I heard I was going to do a little number, that sold me. I thought I could contribute by just being a little bit of a reminder of the original. And I think it turned out well. I got to jump up on a desk and do a dance number. It surprised everybody, but nobody was as surprised as I was. We did several takes of it, and I was just amazed. And I enjoyed it, of course.”
The Secret to Staying Young: A Life Full of Movement and Love
Dick’s youthful spirit continues to inspire people around the world. When asked about his secret to longevity, the Broadway star credited a combination of good genes, a supportive relationship with his wife, and regular exercise. “Genes, I guess, for one thing,” he shared with Yahoo! Entertainment in February 2023. “Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me—that works! My positive attitude, I get that from my wife. And one other thing is, I wrote a book called Keep Moving: I still go to the gym three days a week and work out. And I advise everybody to do that because that’s what ages people—it’s just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer.”
