HGTV darling Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mom, Karen E. Laine, seem to have the perfect mother-daughter relationship on their smash-hit show, Good Bones. But as the show nears its final episodes, Mina has revealed that their dynamic may not be as rosy as it appears on TV.
Mina Starsiak Hawk Opens Up About Her Family's "Challenging" Dynamics
In a candid moment during the Monday, August 28, episode of her podcast, "Mina AF," Mina, 38, spilled the tea about the "current state of affairs" within her family. She admitted that her relationship with her mom is "challenging," and things aren't all sunshine and roses.
The Struggles of Family Relationships
"We all put on our big kid pants and pretend to be nice in public," Mina explained. "Then we retreat to our corners of the universe and talk s**t about each other." She went on to reveal that her relationship with her mom isn't in a great place, and the same goes for her relationship with her brothers, Tad and William. "It’s complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. We don’t really engage much, and the last time we did, it wasn’t super positive. That was maybe a year ago."

A Mother's Role in Mina's Life
Mina, who shares two children, Jack and Charlotte, with her husband Steve Hawk, also discussed her mother's involvement in her kids' lives. "My mom isn't involved in their lives on a regular basis," she said. "We kind of just coexist. We went on a family vacation together, and everyone was pleasant enough around each other. But is that the right thing? Or are we all just pretending to be okay while being wildly dysfunctional?"
Decisions About Family Gatherings
With Jack’s fifth birthday party approaching, Mina found herself in a tough spot: Should she invite her family members? She pondered whether their presence would impact her children. "Will they even notice who’s there and who’s not? There’s going to be animals galore, and that’s all they care about," she mused. "Having to explain 'This is why you’re not invited' opens up a line of communication that I really don’t want to have right now. It sounds exhausting. So again, I fall back to 'Do I just invite everyone because it’s the path of least resistance?' But we’ve always done that, and it hasn’t led to any real improvement."
"I know if we keep doing the same thing, we’ll keep getting the same results," Mina added. "And none of us are happy with that."
The Journey of 'Good Bones'
Mina and Karen, 60, founded their home renovation company, Two Chicks and a Hammer, in Indianapolis, Indiana, back in 2008. Their journey took off in 2016 when they debuted their HGTV show, which ran for seven successful seasons. Karen eventually retired in 2019 and made sporadic appearances on the series. In August 2023, Mina announced that the show would conclude after its eighth season, marking the end of an era.
